Rousanne

Name of varietal: Roussanne

Common synonyms: Bergeron (Savoie), Barbin, Courtoisie, Fromental, Remoulette, Greffon, Rebelot, Roussette, Rusan Belyi, Rusan Blan

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to the Rhone region of France

History of the grape: Roussanne likely gets its name from the light brown color of its skin (“roux” in French). Roussanne is used throughout the Rhone and Southern France primarily as a blending grape. It’s one of the only white varietals, along with its wondertwin grape Marsanne, that is allowed in white Cotes du Rhone besides Viognier. It is also one of the blending grapes of Chateauneuf -du-Pape. In Savoie, where it is called Bergeron, it has a rare starring role in the aromatic Chignin wines. Roussanne is one of the original Rhone varietals that was brought to Australia in the 1880s and is now popular with the Rhone Rangers movement in California. Though it is a notoriously pesky grape to grow, it is still prized for its unique aromatics and acidity Read more »

Rousanne on Snooth

  • Château d'Aqueria Lirac Blanc 2009

    Snoothrank:

Powdered sugar and chalky on the nose with cherries and raspberries. Light dry red fruit palate, some cinnamon sugar spice but not a huge amount of complexity. Nice. Read More

  • Paso Robles Trip Notes: West of PasoThis was a trip my wife and I had planned ... Booker White, $50.00 - (75% Rousanne, 25% Viognier)This was one of the standouts of the trip, right out of the gate. This wine is very soft and also un-filtered, with an off-dry, or is it off-sweet palate? Not sure, it’s right in a sort of sweet spot, featuring f... Read More

  • Moon Curser Afraid of the Dark 2010

    Snoothrank:

Moon Curser Vineyards is the current incarnation of Twisted Tree Vineyards but ... but ... Blanc - though more Rousanne and less Viognier might be a gentle suggestion. This direction is the right direction. Recommended - if you are so fortunate as to find it in your local Read More

  • Truchard Roussanne Carneros 2010

    Snoothrank:

This is an awesome white wine that has a deep rich flavor. With a light nose and tropical fruit flavor. You can really taste the oak. This 2009 is aging very well and I recommend it highly. Serve as an apertif or with your favorite meal. Read More

Sweet and creamy without the oak or vanilla. It's actually amazing how much this captures the actual essence of Cali Chardonnay without having the two main traits. Read More

  • Bois Menestrel Vacqueyras 2006

    Snoothrank:

First of all, do not confuse the 'menestrel' with the word 'menestral'. And ... And ... Note the use of Rousanne and Viognier, which could technically be in the same percentages as something from the Northern Rhone, Hermitage and Cote Rotie included. Rouge: Min. 90% combined Grenache (min. 50%), Syrah and Mourvèdre (min. 20% combined Syra... Read More

  • Domaine des Cretes Marsanne Rousanne Vin de Pays d'Oc 2009

    Snoothrank:

a full, rounded little number. A richness initially with citrus/lemon flavours, tempered by a nice slew of acidity and a herb-dominated finish. A little barrel-fermentation adds an interesting complexity. Not the most complex or textural wine but an absolute blast with a roast chicken Read More
