Rousanne

Name of varietal: Roussanne

Common synonyms: Bergeron (Savoie), Barbin, Courtoisie, Fromental, Remoulette, Greffon, Rebelot, Roussette, Rusan Belyi, Rusan Blan

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to the Rhone region of France

History of the grape: Roussanne likely gets its name from the light brown color of its skin (“roux” in French). Roussanne is used throughout the Rhone and Southern France primarily as a blending grape. It’s one of the only white varietals, along with its wondertwin grape Marsanne, that is allowed in white Cotes du Rhone besides Viognier. It is also one of the blending grapes of Chateauneuf -du-Pape. In Savoie, where it is called Bergeron, it has a rare starring role in the aromatic Chignin wines. Roussanne is one of the original Rhone varietals that was brought to Australia in the 1880s and is now popular with the Rhone Rangers movement in California. Though it is a notoriously pesky grape to grow, it is still prized for its unique aromatics and acidity Read more »

  • Vignobles Brunier Vieux Telegraphe Red Chateauneuf du Pape 2010

    Snoothrank:

Sweet and soft on the nose with early accents of mocha, sweet tobacco leaf, allspice and brown sugar joined by dried bay leaf and black currants. On entry this shows excellent integration and while there is plenty of acidity here, it is held nicely in check by the rich yet not weighty fruit. The oak is well measured as well, yielding a rather se... Read More

  • Tablas Creek White Rhone Blend Paso Robles Esprit de Beaucastel Blanc 2009

    Snoothrank:

Fantastic Paso white Rhone blend of Roussanne, Grenache Blanc and Picpoul Blanc. Extremely well balanced with dried apricot, almond and ginger. Somewhat dry with nice acidity, subtle oak and a long silky finish. Very similar to the 2010 with the difference being that the '09 has a bit more citrus and lemon chiffon most likely due to have a bit ... Read More

  • Vignobles Brunier Vieux Telegraphe Red Chateauneuf du Pape 2010

    Snoothrank:

Tight and dark on the nose, with hints of old wood and cloves along with a dry earthiness, all lurking under blackberry fruit topped with hints of pepper and menthol. Smooth and a bit matte in the mouth, with some dry tannins embedded in a core of plummy fruit thats framed with hints of meat, coffee and sweet spices. The mouthfeel is a bit four... Read More

  • Here I am trying to think of my "Wine of The Year" as well as the runner ups.  I see a lot of forums do this, but it's usually a bunch of impossible to obtain bottles or vintage wines that cost too much for the average person to afford. I find these lists pretty useless, since the best use that anyone could get from a topic like this, is to find... Read More
