Roriz

The only classic variety of the Douro not indigenous to Portugal, Tinta Roriz is known in Spain, its birthplace, as Tempranillo. The name, from "temprana," or "early," refers to its trait of ripening early. Of the top varietals, Tinta Roriz is the most variable in in quality. High in vigor, moderate in productivity and highly resistant to heat and aridity, it grows best on hot, dry south-facing schist slopes, away from water, with shelter from wind. Such siting helps curb the vine’s vigor and also helps it avoid rot, to which it is susceptible. The Tinta Roriz produces thick-skinned, deeply-colored grapes not too high in acidity which yield masculine wines of firm tannic structure, excellent complexity and distinctive resiny fragrance. It constitutes 12.1% of plantings in the Douro Valley, the second most prevalent vine. Alternate Names: Tempranillo; Aragonez; possibly the Valdepeñas of California – Description from WineFueled

A nice medium red in the glass. Blackberry, plum, dark cherry fruit hit the nose lead the way to chocolate, spice, earth and a unique citrus mixing with mild tannins and acidity. Good food wine. Paul 88 points Read More

  • Quinta Do Castro Superior Douro 2013

    Snoothrank:

Dark ruby in the glass with a very small separation ring. Aromas of blackberries spice, dark chocolate, anise are covered with a puff of smoke with every swirl. The body is medium to full with smoke going away and is replaced by an accent note cinnamon. Well balanced tannins and acidity leave a medium long aftertaste. Well done - hold or drink -... • Dow's Late Bottle Vintage 2006

    Snoothrank:

It is wonderful when these age and you get to the stage that the black and blueberry notes combine with butterscotch, a slight peppery note and a chocolate following. Lip smacking good....with French vanilla ice cream, chocolate brownies and the port drizzled over them. Drink now - Paul 90 oints Read More
