History of the grape: There are 6th century written documents by Cassiodoro, a magistrate of Visigoth King Theodorus, describing a sweet wine made from half dried grapes in Verona that is mostly likely an early version of Amarone or Recioto made from Rondinella and its blending partners Corvina and Molinara. “Straw wine,” the process used to make these wines by drying grapes on straw mats before pressing, is a style of wine-making that was passed on from the ancient Greeks. In 643 Lombard King Rotari wrote an edict protecting Rondinella and other local grapes from being pulled. • Famiglia Pasqua Amarone 2010

    Snoothrank:

Ruby red with a tinge of brick in the glass. Dark fruits on the nose that change to red and raisins when drank and some earthiness that reminds me of sweet edler berry wine. Acidity is light and the tannins are smooth with a short finish. Read More

Gorgeous on the nose full of notes of violets, spicy and jammy with wild berry, prune, salted plum and mulberry fruit. Creamy and quite sweet in the mouth, this remains clear on the palate with lovely balsamic toned prune, dried cherry and wild strawberry jam flavors that leads to a modest finish with some peppery spicy nuances. • Recioto Della Valpolicella la Roggia 2010

Huge aromas of raisins, dried blackberries, black cherries are joined by accents of bitter chocolate, black tea, and leather on the complex and deep nose. This is relatively sweet, with huge acids keep this lively, if quite creamy with black cherry fruit laced with vanilla on the palate. Theres a lot of spice and floral accent to the palate tho... • Le Ragose Corvina Blend Amarone Della Valpolicella 2006

    Snoothrank:

The gorgeous nose, shows off brilliant aromas of sweet herbs, complex middle eastern spice, dried herb stem, and rose stems. Elegant and wide open in the mouth, there are lovely red fruit flavors here, redolent of raspberry juice, then tobacco, bitter wild cherries, and a little cinnamon add engaging complexity.
