Parentage of the grape: mutation of Corvina

History of the grape: There are 6th century written documents by Cassiodoro, a magistrate of Visigoth King Theodorus, describing a sweet wine made from half dried grapes in Verona that is mostly likely an early version of Amarone or Recioto made from Rondinella and its blending partners Corvina and Molinara. “Straw wine,” the process used to make these wines by drying grapes on straw mats before pressing, is a style of wine-making that was passed on from the ancient Greeks. In 643 Lombard King Rotari wrote an edict protecting Rondinella and other local grapes from being pulled. Venice became a center of trade during the Byzantine Empire, and Valpolicella (a name that is a likely combination of ancient Greek and Latin meaning “wine from many cellars”) wines made with Rondinella and its sidekicks became a popular export. Rondinella on Snooth

  • Tommasi Ripasso Valpolicella 2011

    Snoothrank:

Pepper, leather, dried blue flowers, and a hint of grilled meats frame subtle fruit on the nose. With a hint of sweetness on entry, this turns immediately round and generous in the mouth. Silky, though with some weight to the polished black cherry fruit on the palate that shows flashes of mint and spice leading to a lightly spiced, baked cherry ... Read More

  • Tommasi Viticoltori Valpolicella Classico Superiore Rafael 2011

    Snoothrank:

Spicy on the nose, and redolent of small wild flowers wrapped around blue and black fruits. Supple and broad on the palate, this really reaches from side to side of the mouth with attractively aromatic blue floral inner mouth perfumes, a hint of something candied and minty and then a core of slightly wild plummy, extract of wild cherry fruit. • Brolo Campofiorin Oro Rosso del Veronese IGT 2010

    Snoothrank:

A little smoky and earthy on the nose which is curiously a bit nutty as well. Made in a polished, fairly rich style, this features a nice blend of fresh plum and dried cherry fruit that's a bit medicinal and short but smooth as silk with a hint of vanilla over the wild cherry fruit up front, and sneaky length, with flavors of grapes skin and min... • Masi Valpolicella Bonacosta 2012

    Snoothrank:

Slightly carbonic nose, shows mineral, and fruity aromas with with peppery accents. Opening with fine young tannins, this is bright and zesty but rather savory and more herbal than fruity on the palate. Clean and fresh on the finish, a bit raw on the nose, and decidedly chalky and slightly astringent. 83pts Read More

  • Zenato Valpolicella Superiore 2011

    Snoothrank:

A little raw, spicy, and hard on the nose with fresh, crisp fruit. in the mouth this is a bit smoky with bright minerality supporting hints of licorice and burnt brownie. Light and clear on the palate, simple fresh and pure, with a clean fresh finish, theres a touch of fruit skin tannin here fleshing out lovely black raspberry fruit. 87pts Read More

  • There isn't a Valpolicella grape.  It is made from a blend of Corvina, Molinara and Rondinella grapes.Amarone is expensive because they don't get as much juice form the partly dried grapes as in a usual pressing of fresh fruit.  That and it isn't released for at least three years from harvest.2004 was a very good year for Amarone and this bottle... • Bertani Recioto Della Valpolicella 2008

    Snoothrank:

Really interesting Italian dessert wine. Big hit of raspberry jam on the nose and the palate along with ripe black cherry. Not overly sweet for a sweet wine but a decent amount or residual sugar to support the acidity. There's a touch of smokey chocolate on the backend that goes nicely with the medium finish. Read More

  • Famiglia Pasqua Amarone 2010

    Snoothrank:

Ruby red with a tinge of brick in the glass. Dark fruits on the nose that change to red and raisins when drank and some earthiness that reminds me of sweet edler berry wine. Acidity is light and the tannins are smooth with a short finish. Read More
