Name of varietal: Rondinella
Common synonyms:
Parentage of the grape: mutation of Corvina
History of the grape: There are 6th century written documents by Cassiodoro, a magistrate of Visigoth King Theodorus, describing a sweet wine made from half dried grapes in Verona that is mostly likely an early version of Amarone or Recioto made from Rondinella and its blending partners Corvina and Molinara. “Straw wine,” the process used to make these wines by drying grapes on straw mats before pressing, is a style of wine-making that was passed on from the ancient Greeks. In 643 Lombard King Rotari wrote an edict protecting Rondinella and other local grapes from being pulled. Venice became a center of trade during the Byzantine Empire, and Valpolicella (a name that is a likely combination of ancient Greek and Latin meaning “wine from many cellars”) wines made with Rondinella and its sidekicks became a popular export. • Bolla Valpolicella Ripasso Classico Superiore 2017

Clear red vino, with muted orange-bronze hues when held against a white light.....watery legs arrive on the inside of the glass after a gentle swirl. The aroma is of spicy alcohol initially, giving way to cinnamon, clove and freshly ground pepper, followed by juicy berries (cherry, blackberry, mild currant), oaked vanilla and leathery notes. T... • Masi Bonacosta Valpolicella Classico DOC 2017

Pours a gentle rustic ruby color, has good clarity and develops sound legs after an aggressive swirl. Very fruit forward aromas of soft cherry, blended with vanilla extract, muted leather and/or tobacco leaf. Flavors that are very much akin to the aroma, with plenty of berry, soft vanilla spice, slight oak and even some dry cranberry astringen... Read More

  • DOCG regulations permit up to 25% of indigenous or what they call ... So they ... ... So they use the Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara, as well as Corvinone and things like Oseleta and Croatina, and Merlot and Cab are both allowed. The thinking is that it's not so much the grape as the vinification and the vineyard that matter. So you may dry the ... Read More

  • Jack, I agree.  I used to be an Amarone fanatic and I would not buy ... ... ... from the three (Corvina, Rondinella, Molinara) usual grapes, if they started breaking tradition.  Now I guess traditions break all the time.  Look at religion, marriage, gender issues, etc.  I may have to accept that wine may be very different in ten years, but I h... • While looking at some Amarones ran across Brigaldara, which is being touted by ... a blend of 70% corvina 20% Rondinella 5% Sangiovese and 5% Cabernet. I know Amarone is a blend but have never seen one with Sangiovese or Cabernet. I have seen Ripasso with Merlot&nbs Read More

  • Read up on Lindeman's thread, and thought this would be a good topic to discuss. To Greg's point about blending Merlot and sometimes Cabernet in with Chianti blends, I hear that trend had been on the downswing, which is probably a good thing for Chianti proper, though there will be some really good "Super Tuscan's" made from the blending as well.... • Masi Corvina Blend Veronese IGT Campofiorin 2015

These Valpolicella wines of Verona have an inviting perfume (nose) of medicinally scented fresh vines. Otherwise, the Corvina (note reference to the Corvids) grape is strongly endowed with bitter cherry (very home-spun in profile) and little else. Good outdoor picnic fare, if that's what you seek. 85.
