Name of varietal: Rondinella
Common synonyms:
Parentage of the grape: mutation of Corvina
History of the grape: There are 6th century written documents by Cassiodoro, a magistrate of Visigoth King Theodorus, describing a sweet wine made from half dried grapes in Verona that is mostly likely an early version of Amarone or Recioto made from Rondinella and its blending partners Corvina and Molinara. “Straw wine,” the process used to make these wines by drying grapes on straw mats before pressing, is a style of wine-making that was passed on from the ancient Greeks. In 643 Lombard King Rotari wrote an edict protecting Rondinella and other local grapes from being pulled. Venice became a center of trade during the Byzantine Empire, and Valpolicella (a name that is a likely combination of ancient Greek and Latin meaning “wine from many cellars”) wines made with Rondinella and its sidekicks became a popular export. Appearance is super light and transparently clear....cherry/raspberry juice looking. The aromas are fresh, lively and youthful....cranberry and tart cherry dominate...the flavors follow suit, being young, tart but fruity and juicy....the mouthfeel is juicy, light and drinkable. Not what I'm used to but I'm glad I tried this wine made from loca... Read More

  • Allegrini Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico 2010

Dark, fully developed black fruit aromas of black currant, blackberry and black cherry with dusty earthiness that shows a nice fresh mushroom quality and a savory note that comes with a good dose of spice. In the mouth this blossoms with bright red fruit notes of red cherry, ripe raspberry and a touch of medicine leading the way for an incredibl... Read More

  • Pietro Sartori Amarone Della Valpolicella 2010

  • Allegrini Palazzo Della Torre 2011

Black and blue fruits on the nose even if a bit shy. A rather heavy dark cherry on the palate followed by enough acid to balance and finished rather long with mouth drying tannins, Reminded me a bit of a tannat blend. Interesting and different. Read More

  • Corte Armani Valpolecella Classico Superior Ripasso 2010

88-89 points and very well done. This is not a "baby Amarone" for nothing. Good fruit raspbrerry, dark cherry with a touch of blackberry thrown in for good measure. Enough spice and pepper to give a little added snap to the acidity. The tannins are amazingly light yet aggressive enough to give a little chew to the wine. Very enjoyable drinker an... Read More

  • Zenato Alanera Rosso Veronese IGT 2012

Dark and ripe black cherry and cinnamon aromas with notes of blueberry and vanilla. Rich blackberry flavors are rather fresh, with a light body and bramble fruit character, with a cherry finish and a chew of tannin.87 pts Read More
