Parentage of the grape: mutation of Corvina

History of the grape: There are 6th century written documents by Cassiodoro, a magistrate of Visigoth King Theodorus, describing a sweet wine made from half dried grapes in Verona that is mostly likely an early version of Amarone or Recioto made from Rondinella and its blending partners Corvina and Molinara. “Straw wine,” the process used to make these wines by drying grapes on straw mats before pressing, is a style of wine-making that was passed on from the ancient Greeks. In 643 Lombard King Rotari wrote an edict protecting Rondinella and other local grapes from being pulled. Venice became a center of trade during the Byzantine Empire, and Valpolicella (a name that is a likely combination of ancient Greek and Latin meaning “wine from many cellars”) wines made with Rondinella and its sidekicks became a popular export. Rondinella on Snooth

  • Bussola Valpolicella Ripasso 2004

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a bright ruby color in the glass, with just the faintest hint of amber along the edges. The nose is quite nice, with earthy notes of cedar, leather and fresh herbs over concentrated fruit notes of ripe plum and raisin. The taste is sublime, with a burst of sweet cherry and anise at the outset, which transitions to some espresso and... Read More

  • Zenato Alanera 2012

    Snoothrank:

Rich, spiced, dark plum is prominent on the nose with a solid layer of shale ... tobacco. 55% Corvina, 25% Rondinella, 10% Corvinone, 5% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. 90 P Read More

  • Last week, we looked at a group of ubiquitous white wines. All of these wines ... blend of 65% Corvina, 30% Rondinella and 5% Molinara from Veneto sells for around $13. It begins with a very aromatic bouquet of red cherry, plum and some herbs. Basically it smells like a delicious fresh fruit salad. The wine tastes fresh and fruity as well. Thi... Read More

  • It’s not what you think it is, and I’m not sure what the producers ... $26Majority Corvina with 10% Rondinella and 10% Croatina and Osceleta in a typical blend. 18 months  in barrique Smoky, a bit of awkward oak, needs to integrate on the intense licorice, smoked meat, and black fruit scented nose.  Juicy, big and mouth filling, if a bit edgy ... • Bertani Secco Valpolicella Valpantena Ripasso 2011

    Snoothrank:

Floral and mineral on the nose with strong aromas of limestone and mineral water, over underlying spice with hints of violets and some dried cherry fruit. Fresher and lighter on entry than one might expect but this quickly gains focus in the mouth with good acids and austere little tannins adding dryness and depth to the palate. The flavors are ... • Tedeschi Maternigo Valpolicella Superiore 2011

    Snoothrank:

Chalky and tight on the nose with reticent notes of dried herbs and emerging notes of tobacco, and huge soil tones. This is a big Valpolicella, a little chewy, packed with fruit that retains a nice edge of bitterness that recalls apple, seeds. Air brings out the violets on the nose, while bright acids add lift to the juicy blueberry, red currant... Read More

  • Tedeschi Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso Capitel San Rocco 2011

    Snoothrank:

Peppery on the nose with precise aromas of black pepper corn, dark fruit, and briar wood, that picks up a little pollen floral tone and some gentle baking spice with air. This is a lovely small wine with a slightly creamy texture that remains quite aromatic in the mouth with a floral extract quality over red fruit flavors. Bright acids and livel... Read More

  • Tedeschi Lucchine Valpolicella Classico 2012

    Snoothrank:

Gorgeously floral on the nose, with a lovely core of crushed blueberry, and wild berry almost black currant aromas. On the palate one finds big acid driven red fruit flavors supported by some nice fine tannins and a bit of minerality all leading to a nice cherry skin finish. Juicy, firm and brightly vivid in the mouth this is all about fresh an... Read More

  • Le Ragose Valpolicella Ripasso 2008

    Snoothrank:

Dark cherry fruit greets the nose along with layers of spicy, earthy, slightly oaky, and decidedly medicinal herbal aromas that have a slight beet root edge to them. Bright acids on entry promise a fresh wie though this immediately reveals a bit of a meaty palate rich with dark cherry fruit, rose petals, and then masses of minerally, roasted me... Read More
