Parentage of the grape: likely indigenous to Germany
History of the grape: As with many varietals, exact details of Riesling’s origins are unclear. It is known that in 14th century Germany, attention shifted to white grape cultivation when it was obvious that red grapes weren’t up to snuff compared to those with more color and structure from neighboring countries. The first written mention of Riesling is dated March 13, 1435 when Count Katzenelnbogen at Russelsheim bought six vines of Riesling from Klaus Kleinfish for 22 soldi. From this point, there is written evidence throughout the 15th century of various sales and plantings around Germany as well as Austria and Alsace. Riesling on Snooth

  • Schloss Lieser Riesling Kabinett 2007

There's alot of sulfur here that gives this a bit of rubber sole, sneakers aromas but the underlying floral, rust, and slate character still shines through. This starts off quite sweet and fairly soft and seems disjointed with a chunky, clumsy feel throughout the mid-palate and a finish that shows a bit of over-ripe banana sweetness. Perhaps wit... • Joh. Jos. Prüm Riesling Kabinett Graacher Himmelreich 2007

There is a bit of sulfur here but it can't obscure the apricoty fruit with subtle green plum edges. There are light spice and slate tones that add some complexity here. On entry this is downright succulent with a voluptuous feel that leads to a liquid mineral/quartz midpalate. The backend is very lean and crisp leading to a fine, long, focused m... Read More

  • Von Hövel Riesling Kabinett Oberemmeler Hütte 2007

Sharp and dusty on the nose this offers up a balanced array of crisp orchard fruits with notes of apple and unripe peach above the base of dusty earth. Sweet and broad on the attack before the lemon and green apple tones burst through in a bolt of crisp, lean freshness. The finish here is focused and very acid driven giving the impression of a z... Really complexity on the nose here with an initial set of mineral, salt and gunpowder aromas that are backed up by a very bright lime candy tone. This closes slowly in the glass but offers lovely dusty slate notes. Sweet up front yet with excellent backing acidity giving this really nice cut. The fruit is fresh orchard/apricot toned on the midpa... Read More

Never had a wine like this before. Very sweet and acidic and has strong flavors of lychee and melon with a prickly acidic finish. More complexity than I was expecting but a little sweet on the finish. Read More
