Parentage of the grape: likely indigenous to Germany

History of the grape: As with many varietals, exact details of Riesling’s origins are unclear. It is known that in 14th century Germany, attention shifted to white grape cultivation when it was obvious that red grapes weren’t up to snuff compared to those with more color and structure from neighboring countries. The first written mention of Riesling is dated March 13, 1435 when Count Katzenelnbogen at Russelsheim bought six vines of Riesling from Klaus Kleinfish for 22 soldi. From this point, there is written evidence throughout the 15th century of various sales and plantings around Germany as well as Austria and Alsace. The meticulous German artist Hieronymus Bosch makes a mention of it in his book on herbs, published in 1577, using the modern spelling Read more »

Riesling on Snooth

  • Priam Vineyards Blackledge White NV

    Snoothrank:

blend of Riesling and Cayuga grapes, this was my favorite of the Priam whites. The same blend as the Jeremy River White, this is a dry, fuller-bodied wine. The nose is deep and fruity, and in the mouth I detected the pineapple mentioned in the tasting notes. But the real surprise - and delight - of the Blackledge White is the butterscotch fin... • Priam Vineyards Chardonnay Blend Salmon River White NV

    Snoothrank:

Named for the Salmon River, which flows through the area and nearby Salmon ... ... ... A blend of chardonnay, riesling and muscat grapes, the color is a pale yellow-gold which catches the light nicely. Barrel-fermented, the oak provides a nice smokiness to both the nose and the mouth, which balances nicely with the citrus note Read More

  • Forestville Riesling 2005

    Snoothrank:

thick, sweet but not cloyingly so, with typical riesling peach flavors and a nice balance of acid. Finishes with a hint of petrol that you'll find in better German rieslings. I picked this up at a wine outlet for $6, such a steal! Looking forward to having it with some peaches at a summer brunch. Read More

  • Sofia Riesling 2008

    Snoothrank:

A true sparkling yeast bomb. Very bread heady with bouts of peppy cantaloupe and Panettone. I call this a toothpick wine: cocktail party, food loving libation. This would bring life to a buttery reggiano or a mile-high risen rosemary focaccia. Read More
