Pinot Grigio

Common synonyms: Pinot Gris, “white Pinot Noir,” (but not to be confused with Pinot Blanc, which is another grape entirely), Pinot Beurot (France), Rulander (Germany), Tokay d’Alsace,

Parentage of the grape: Burgundy as Pinot Gris in the 1300s.

History of the grape: Pinot Gris was planted in Burgundy, France as far back as the 1300s. It then spread through Europe, via Alsace, Switzerland and into Germany, eventually making it to Italy, where it was given the name Pinot Grigio. When Phylloxera hit Burgundy, Pinot Gris with its original characteristics was wiped out and the hybrids grafted with American stock to save the vines were never the same quality, so crops were left to mostly die out. But in the Alsace region, Germany and Italy, the hybrids fared much better and the grape was able to thrive. Masi offered a bottle of balsamic vinegar with this wine so my companion had to ... ... and forward white fruit (Pinot Grigio component) on the palate. Soft, gentle - this wine is a perfect aperitif. Decent Italian white for a decent price. 86 point Read More

  • Charles Shaw Pinot Grigio California 2010

    Snoothrank:

The Pinot Grigio is an excellent wine. My only recommendation is that do not use the artificial cork. It is very difficult to open. Use instead Screw Cap. (Matanza Winery is using it!) Easier to open and less expensive for you. You should consider also to 1.5 liter bottles. Andre, San Rafael, CA Read More

  • Kris Pinot Grigio 2013

    Snoothrank:

Flavors are very citrus driven, with mostly lemon and lime, but there's some honeydew melon notes and a touch of pine nuts as well to round out the flavors. Read More

  • Turkish wines aren’t exactly at the forefront of our collective fine wine ... somewhat reminiscent of good Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay in its tropical fruits and body. Oak, cream, and ripe apples round it out, and it finishes with a pleasantly astringent bite. Turasan Emir 2013 (Cappadocia, $15) Emir is grown in only one spot globally, the Capp... Read More
