Pinot Grigio

Common synonyms: Pinot Gris, “white Pinot Noir,” (but not to be confused with Pinot Blanc, which is another grape entirely), Pinot Beurot (France), Rulander (Germany), Tokay d’Alsace,

Parentage of the grape: Burgundy as Pinot Gris in the 1300s.
History of the grape: Pinot Gris was planted in Burgundy, France as far back as the 1300s. It then spread through Europe, via Alsace, Switzerland and into Germany, eventually making it to Italy, where it was given the name Pinot Grigio. When Phylloxera hit Burgundy, Pinot Gris with its original characteristics was wiped out and the hybrids grafted with American stock to save the vines were never the same quality, so crops were left to mostly die out. But in the Alsace region, Germany and Italy, the hybrids fared much better and the grape was able to thrive. It was brought to Australia in the 1830s by James Busby, who is credited with being the “Father of Australian Wine.” It was eventually brought over to Read more »

  • Tommasi Pinot Grigio Venezie IGT le Rosse 2005

Golden color. Nose is pleasing. A little fruity, but very faint. First sip, ... ... special. Sort of a bland Pinot Grigio to be honest. Nothing remarkable. Slight effervescent quality. Very little mid palate; however, it does have a very smooth finish. Even though the alcohol is 12%, it does not finish that way. Not a bad Pinot, but definit... Read More

  • Castello Banfi Pinot Grigio Toscana IGT San Angelo 2005

I wouldn't call myself a wine connoisseur, but I do know when I'm tasting a ... a good wine. And, although Pinot Grigios are typically looked down upon (perhaps because they are very abundant), I've tasted many of them and San Angelo's Pinot Grigios are some of the best I've tasted. I bought a bottle of the 2005 last night at a Sam's here in... Read More

  • Alois Lageder Pinot Grigio Valdadige Portico Dei Leoni 2005

Nice light golden color. Good fruity nose. Very smooth. First sip is quite pleasing. Almost a slight effervescent sense to it. Smooth and easy on the tongue, not too harsh or biting. Transitions quite nicely into a subtle finish. Not to acidic, not to harsh. The flavors could last a bit longer in the end, it all disappears rather quickly; really... Read More

I'm a wine newbie. Thus I only have the experience of a few months since ... ... smooth tannin white wines, Pinot Grigios and other similar whites.
