Pinot Blanc

Name of varietal: Pinot Blanc

Common synonyms: Weissburgunder, Klevner, Feher Burgundi, Pinot Bianco, Rulandske Bile, Rulandske biele, Blanc Vrai

Parentage of the grape: genetic mutation of Pinot Noir

History of the grape: Pinot Blanc was first grown in Burgundy and Champagne, France, and can be traced by some sources as far back as the 1st century. For a long time, little distinction was made between it and Chardonnay, however a number of vintners who knew what they were doing began producing it as a varietal release. It eventually came to prominence in the Alsace region, where it is one of the four most common grapes grown there. It made its way across Europe and to other parts of the world from there and is now a popular grape in cooler climate regions where it is most able to thrive.

Characteristics of the grape: light to medium-bodied, acidic, grapefruit rind, peach, apricot, canteloupe, honeysuckle, white pepper

Pinot Blanc on Snooth

  • With Christmas lunch now on the radar, Snoothers who enjoy cooking are already thinking about a wine match with the inevitable smoked salmon starter. For French Sauvignon Blanc lovers Sancerre is a popular choice but how about ringing the changes this year by pulling a Sancerre lookalike off the shelf. Cheverny and Touraine Sauvignon Blanc may n... Read More

  • But then again 2012 and 2014 are hardly all that much 'older vintage's (at least in the case of 'white wine' in general, not PG--ever had any aged white Burgundy, Mosel or Rhein riesling, Champage blanc de blancs, Loire chenin blanc, various from the Jura, Sauternes or Tokaji or Madeira, etc., etc. Al??), even if these bottles are of cheap swill... • Italian Wines, for $1 each?Yes. I found them, and they're quite nice! Well, I have to admit that for about a year now, my favorite type of wine is Pinot Grigio. But I have to say, the Soave Classico is what I'm sipping now and it is very SMOOTH. Unbelievable for a buck. This is the Orangevale, California Dollar Tree and they also have a Moscato,... • According to a YouGov poll, forty-one percent of Americans enjoy wine with Thanksgiving dinner. It's no wonder we spend so much time planning our drink menus. Turkey Day wines have been discussed on Snooth at length over the past ten years. Tastes have evolved to include more than just the mainstays. Traditions have been shattered, and most meal... • Boy, I leave guys unattended for a little while and you get all testy with each other. ;-)Re: Wild Boar - Wineries don’t sell grapes, vineyards do.  No wine label ever lists a winery name as a source of fruit. No AVA or vineyard source listed on the bottle because the target market would not be moved by such. They don’t grow good Pinot Noir in N... Read More

  • Afraid this is getting messy so will start some more focused threads of their own. And $30 dollars isn't necessarily on the cheap end for sauvignon blanc. You can still frequently find very pleasantly drinkable Entres-Deux-Mers, for example, at under $15. Had suggested the $30 rather than $20 limit specifically for pinot noir which, unfortunatel... • I am easily manipulated into revising this thread, but I wasn't seeing much action regarding cheap Pinot Noir, so I moved on.  Perhaps after a week or so we can refocus on the Pinot's from a certain region....but I would like to see some more examples of the Sancerre region if possible.
