Pinot Blanc

Name of varietal: Pinot Blanc

Common synonyms: Weissburgunder, Klevner, Feher Burgundi, Pinot Bianco, Rulandske Bile, Rulandske biele, Blanc Vrai

Parentage of the grape: genetic mutation of Pinot Noir

History of the grape: Pinot Blanc was first grown in Burgundy and Champagne, France, and can be traced by some sources as far back as the 1st century. For a long time, little distinction was made between it and Chardonnay, however a number of vintners who knew what they were doing began producing it as a varietal release. It eventually came to prominence in the Alsace region, where it is one of the four most common grapes grown there. It made its way across Europe and to other parts of the world from there and is now a popular grape in cooler climate regions where it is most able to thrive.

Characteristics of the grape: light to medium-bodied, acidic, grapefruit rind, peach, apricot, canteloupe, honeysuckle, white pepper

  • My first foray into this sort of discussion group, but my love of the Bucchanalian pleasures in life and the quality of this site have moved me. I am Australian (Sydney), and rate myself as an enthusiastic amateur in winetasting and experience - still learning and enjoying new discoveries after 20+ years. My experience is mostly with Oz wine, wi... Read More

Too bad you can't really get away with that type of name in English. Guess we have to suffice with 'Big House' or 'Suckfizzle' or '10 Minutes by Tractor'... Read More

  • Would be interested in hearing from people here about any redwine and fish, crustacean, mollusk, etc. combinations they/you have found to work successfully. Having been initiated at the beginning of my wine tippling into the traditional white-for-fish, red-for-meat school of thought, I've since found that several reds and roses can work just fin... • Crama Oprisor Maiastru Blanc de Romania 2008

    Snoothrank:

Now, here's an interesting Romanian entry in the league of fine quality white cepages. An assembly of Chardonnay, Muscat Ottonel and Pinot Grigio - Maiastru Blanc de Romania 2008 is a lively, floral, dry wine with aromas of elder, citrus and violets, medium bodied, with good finish and pleasant aftertaste of vanilla and grapefruit. It is a soft,... Read More

  • Can anyone recommend some very dry white wines (available in the UK)? I have found I don't even like medium or semisweet white wine - they're okay and drinkable but I would like to find something I really like. I have come across some in restaurants but they either don't list the brand/vineyard or I forget what it was. And of course it's not li... Read More
