Pinot Blanc

Name of varietal: Pinot Blanc
Common synonyms: Weissburgunder, Klevner, Feher Burgundi, Pinot Bianco, Rulandske Bile, Rulandske biele, Blanc Vrai
Parentage of the grape: genetic mutation of Pinot Noir
History of the grape: Pinot Blanc was first grown in Burgundy and Champagne, France, and can be traced by some sources as far back as the 1st century. For a long time, little distinction was made between it and Chardonnay, however a number of vintners who knew what they were doing began producing it as a varietal release. It eventually came to prominence in the Alsace region, where it is one of the four most common grapes grown there. It made its way across Europe and to other parts of the world from there and is now a popular grape in cooler climate regions where it is most able to thrive.
Characteristics of the grape: light to medium-bodied, acidic, grapefruit rind, peach, apricot, canteloupe, honeysuckle, white pepper

  • Hi everyone! What a fantastic website! Looking forward to getting to know you all and having a great time chatting about wine! It's such a pity that it's very difficult for us down here in South Africa to get American wines... I'm trying my best though, recently got my sweaty palms on some Ridge Santa Cruz Cabernet and some Haskell Shiraz. Love... Read More

  • Hi, I am hosting a varietal wine tasting for 6 people. This is my first, I'm a total newbie as are all my guests. I'm wondering how many different labels I should have in my tasting and then how many bottles of each for six people. This will be a blind tasting and I want to throw in a Merlot or other varietal to shake things up. Also, this n... Read More

  • I am always impressed with how some people, mostly real wine experts have learned to pick out many specific flavors in a wine. Once in a while a specific flavor jumps out at me, which is sometimes good, sometimes bad. I remember in France, they would sell these kits with maybe 50 or more bottles, each containing different important smells to he... Read More

I'm not a Pinot Grigio fan but I tried this at a wine tasting and WOW. I'm used to the more thin and watery pinots but this one had great body and rich flavor. It hit me as more similar to a sauvignon blanc because of it's grassy and herbaceous notes. It's somewhat more green than yellow in the glass and little acidity. Must try Read More

Peter and Robert are the children of Cesare, the Mondavi who started it all.  In a way, Robert was following in his father’s footsteps when he set off to found his epo... Read More

  • Leon Baur Pinot Blanc 2007

A beautifully clear, bright and golden glass of wine. Very clean on the nose with aromas of lemon, shortbread and some light spice. On the palate it's dry with medium acidity. A lovely taste which is hard to tie down - something like gooseberry but also bready and biscuity, with a rich body that feels creamy on the tongue. Good finish.Very good w... Read More
