Pinot Blanc

Name of varietal: Pinot Blanc
Common synonyms: Weissburgunder, Klevner, Feher Burgundi, Pinot Bianco, Rulandske Bile, Rulandske biele, Blanc Vrai
Parentage of the grape: genetic mutation of Pinot Noir
History of the grape: Pinot Blanc was first grown in Burgundy and Champagne, France, and can be traced by some sources as far back as the 1st century. For a long time, little distinction was made between it and Chardonnay, however a number of vintners who knew what they were doing began producing it as a varietal release. It eventually came to prominence in the Alsace region, where it is one of the four most common grapes grown there. It made its way across Europe and to other parts of the world from there and is now a popular grape in cooler climate regions where it is most able to thrive.
Characteristics of the grape: light to medium-bodied, acidic, grapefruit rind, peach, apricot, canteloupe, honeysuckle, white pepper

  • Trinity Oaks Pinot Noir California 2007

I would give this 3.75 stars. I had the 2008 last night at a very nice restaurant. It was one of the cheaper offerings---$32 a bottle. It was delicious. I had it with a blue cheese & pear salad, grilled salmon with saffron buerre blanc. It had more body than most Pinot Noirs....with a fabulous lingering soft tannin silky finish.Imagine my surpri... This attractive red had a lot of very fine oak on the nose at first - in fact it reminded me of my grandparents old dining room table with lots of nua... Read More

  • Domaine Weinbach Pinot Blanc Alsace Aoc Pinot Blanc Reserve 2006

We're talking a gorgeous mellow golden-rod color with a tropical fruits meet honeysuckle nose, so why is the finish so lackluster? There's a decent balance here, you can taste the residual sugar and a hint of brine. However at the end it leaves something to be desired. On it's own or with food, it seems like it's just a wine that fades into the ... Read More

  • Dopff & Irion Riesling Alsace Aoc 2007

A wee bit pricier than its Pinot Blanc cousin from D & I, but even more flavor. I got it at Trader Joe's and it was around 12 or 14 dollars. A simple Riesling, so straight forward and clean. I made pasta e vongholi and it was perfect with that and a butter lettuce and avocado salad. I especially like this wine at the end of summer/beginning of ... Read More
