Pinot Blanc

Name of varietal: Pinot Blanc
Common synonyms: Weissburgunder, Klevner, Feher Burgundi, Pinot Bianco, Rulandske Bile, Rulandske biele, Blanc Vrai
Parentage of the grape: genetic mutation of Pinot Noir
History of the grape: Pinot Blanc was first grown in Burgundy and Champagne, France, and can be traced by some sources as far back as the 1st century. For a long time, little distinction was made between it and Chardonnay, however a number of vintners who knew what they were doing began producing it as a varietal release. It eventually came to prominence in the Alsace region, where it is one of the four most common grapes grown there. It made its way across Europe and to other parts of the world from there and is now a popular grape in cooler climate regions where it is most able to thrive.
Characteristics of the grape: light to medium-bodied, acidic, grapefruit rind, peach, apricot, canteloupe, honeysuckle, white pepper

  • Hugel & Fils Pinot Blanc Hugel Coffret Cadeau 2005

As expected, the wine shows a few signs of ageing: It has a beautifully mellow, ... ... the inexpensice Alsace Pinot Blanc's just aren't any good. I'd rather spend my money on one bottle of this marvellous 2005 Hugel than on a few bottles of the cheap plonk. If you like fresh pinot noirs with raffinesse, you should really try this wine, especi... Read More

  • I've found myself recently heading for much more acidic reds -- mainly Italian. ... more Alsace-style (a lot of Pinot Blancs, preferably with a bit of age, and Gewurtzträminers) -- and good white Burgundies (Adelaide Hills chardonnays in a pinch).I'd be interested to hear how your taste has changed, and why you think it ha Read More

Wine A costs $20 and gets a score of 90 points and Wine B costs $45 and gets a score of 90 points as well; is there a formula that can tell me (mathematically) that the value of Wine A is higher?I am sure one of you may have ... • A "groovy autumn find" from my site Riesling Domaine Dopff (Dopff au Moulin, 12.5%) - lovely nose with floral white peach and developing linseed oil notes; delicate yet quite intense mouthfeel moving on to oilier texture and flavours, and finishing with subtle underlying mineral bite. Drink now although it's still fresh ... Read More

  • Paul Blanck Pinot Noir Cuvée F 2007

One of the lightest reds I've seen in a long time so surprised to find the berry/cherry fruit tasted a bit cooked. Slightly smoky minerality. Light and fresh in the mouth, I see why they suggest chilling but think would kill the complexity. Read More
