Pinot Blanc

Name of varietal: Pinot Blanc

Common synonyms: Weissburgunder, Klevner, Feher Burgundi, Pinot Bianco, Rulandske Bile, Rulandske biele, Blanc Vrai

Parentage of the grape: genetic mutation of Pinot Noir

History of the grape: Pinot Blanc was first grown in Burgundy and Champagne, France, and can be traced by some sources as far back as the 1st century. For a long time, little distinction was made between it and Chardonnay, however a number of vintners who knew what they were doing began producing it as a varietal release. It eventually came to prominence in the Alsace region, where it is one of the four most common grapes grown there. It made its way across Europe and to other parts of the world from there and is now a popular grape in cooler climate regions where it is most able to thrive.

Characteristics of the grape: light to medium-bodied, acidic, grapefruit rind, peach, apricot, canteloupe, honeysuckle, white pepper

  • I am new to Snooth, so I am about to try some of the recommended wines, but.....My wife and I taste different wines at various wines shops about once a month. I have attended about half a dozen wine and food tasting events, and four or five wine and dinner pairings. Inevitably, the wines we like are the higher priced wines (even in blind tasti... • René Sparr White Blend Alsace Aoc One 2007

    Snoothrank:

The wine named One from René Sparr is exactly the kind of wine you expect when ... Muscat, 39% Sylvaner, 9.5% Pinot Blanc, 16% Riesling, and 7.5% Klevener de Heiligenstein (an Alsatian designation of the Savagnin grape). This wine is a pale yellow in color but not so pale as to be almost colorless. When you first breath in this wine, there is ... Read More

  • Southern Point Pinot Grigio NV

    Snoothrank:

Sprouts Markets in PHX and suburbs is selling a limited amount of 1.5ltr bottles of a 2006 pressing of this wine for $4.00 a pop. It has a moderately sharp finish and a slight hint of oak, although it's probably created in steel vats. However, it also has all the classic flavors of a classic Pinot Grigio. Southern Point is a product of Underd... Read More

  • I am having guests the end of the month, one of whom is a rather talented chef. I know she prefers white wines (and tends toward a vegetarin diet). I'm not very educated on whites, and I'm looking for some recommendations, or some hints on where to look. Personally, I prefer something not-too-sweet. What should I be looking at? Read More
