Pinot Blanc

Name of varietal: Pinot Blanc

Common synonyms: Weissburgunder, Klevner, Feher Burgundi, Pinot Bianco, Rulandske Bile, Rulandske biele, Blanc Vrai

Parentage of the grape: genetic mutation of Pinot Noir

History of the grape: Pinot Blanc was first grown in Burgundy and Champagne, France, and can be traced by some sources as far back as the 1st century. For a long time, little distinction was made between it and Chardonnay, however a number of vintners who knew what they were doing began producing it as a varietal release. It eventually came to prominence in the Alsace region, where it is one of the four most common grapes grown there. It made its way across Europe and to other parts of the world from there and is now a popular grape in cooler climate regions where it is most able to thrive.

Characteristics of the grape: light to medium-bodied, acidic, grapefruit rind, peach, apricot, canteloupe, honeysuckle, white pepper

  • One of the things that continues to amaze me is the just the sheer number of wineries that there are in Northern California. Ive been to a lot of them but there are so many more that I have not been to. Thats why, when I had the opportunity to, I dropped in to Mantazas Creek Winery in Bennett Valley. Mantanzas Creek Winery is one of the histo... Read More

  • A "groovy autumn find" from my site www.winewriting.com:2005 Riesling Domaine Dopff (Dopff au Moulin, 12.5%) - lovely nose with floral white peach and developing linseed oil notes; delicate yet quite intense mouthfeel moving on to oilier texture and flavours, and finishing with subtle underlying mineral bite. Drink now although it's still fresh ... Read More

  • Paul Blanck Pinot Noir Cuvée F 2007

    Snoothrank:

One of the lightest reds I've seen in a long time so surprised to find the berry/cherry fruit tasted a bit cooked. Slightly smoky minerality. Light and fresh in the mouth, I see why they suggest chilling but think would kill the complexity. Read More

  • Wooing Tree Vineyard Blondie 2008

    Snoothrank:

Tasting Notes from Winery: This unique Blanc de Noir was made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes, grown on our family owned vineyard. Ripe hand picked fruit and gentle winemaking have given a wonderfully balanced wine with rich texture and fruit. The elegant champagne colour resulted from leaving juice in contact with its skins for several hours prior... Read More

  • Kellerei Cantina Terlan Alto Adige Terlaner Classico 2007

    Snoothrank:

This is a very interesting / unique wine. At first, lightly chilled, the taste is extremely light... almost flat and unassumingly flavorless. As the wine warms to room temp, it goes through several levels of transformation to become a much brighter, citris, floral and fruit forward white wine. Wonderful with food, it was light enough to not be o... Read More

  • Kreydenweiss Pinot Blanc 2002

    Snoothrank:

Deep golden hue like eiswien. Nose almost like a chardonnay. Wood, straw and some sour notes. On the palate, hints again of straw, lime, pear and melon with a mineral character and hints of sweet, then sour intertwined. Interesting wine. Read More

  • Sadie Family Sequillo White 2007

    Snoothrank:

A magical blend of principally Chenin Blanc with Marsanne, Roussanne and a touch of Viognier. Creamy edged, full, textural, weighty reminiscent of a Pinot Gris but with more of a crisp finish. Very food friendly.http://www.spittoon.biz/the_wine_society_-_brief_notes.html Read More
