Pinot Blanc

Name of varietal: Pinot Blanc

Common synonyms: Weissburgunder, Klevner, Feher Burgundi, Pinot Bianco, Rulandske Bile, Rulandske biele, Blanc Vrai

Parentage of the grape: genetic mutation of Pinot Noir

History of the grape: Pinot Blanc was first grown in Burgundy and Champagne, France, and can be traced by some sources as far back as the 1st century. For a long time, little distinction was made between it and Chardonnay, however a number of vintners who knew what they were doing began producing it as a varietal release. It eventually came to prominence in the Alsace region, where it is one of the four most common grapes grown there. It made its way across Europe and to other parts of the world from there and is now a popular grape in cooler climate regions where it is most able to thrive.

Characteristics of the grape: light to medium-bodied, acidic, grapefruit rind, peach, apricot, canteloupe, honeysuckle, white pepper

  • Every year, UNLV has a big wine tasting to benefit scholarship for the hospitality programs and hotel school.  I had never gone, as it costs $75 for the grand tasting and last year, I decided instead to spend my money on the Wine Spectator Grand Tour which was within a few weeks of UNLVino.I hadn't anticipated going this year either, but while a... • Valley of the Moon Pinot Blanc 2007

    Snoothrank:

Pretty cool chartreuse color, crisp crab apple and chalk notes. Pleasant, but unremarkable. Lacking distinct qualities and character for it to truly stand out, but is a good and light-hearted wine nonetheless. Safe bet for a host gift or for cooking. Pairs nicely with manchego cheese. This is another Charles Smith winner. The wine is full-flavored, and the tannins brush against spice and fruit. One could do worse at twice the price. Read More

  • Korbel Extra Dry NV

    Snoothrank:

A perfect sparkling wine for mimosas! I prefer the Extra Dry to Brut. Korbel has a light apple and melon sweetness from sip to finish - a lively and very enjoyable glass of bubbly. Also pairs well with Belgian chocolate, with or without hazelnuts. Read More
