Pinot Blanc

Name of varietal: Pinot Blanc

Common synonyms: Weissburgunder, Klevner, Feher Burgundi, Pinot Bianco, Rulandske Bile, Rulandske biele, Blanc Vrai

Parentage of the grape: genetic mutation of Pinot Noir

History of the grape: Pinot Blanc was first grown in Burgundy and Champagne, France, and can be traced by some sources as far back as the 1st century. For a long time, little distinction was made between it and Chardonnay, however a number of vintners who knew what they were doing began producing it as a varietal release. It eventually came to prominence in the Alsace region, where it is one of the four most common grapes grown there. It made its way across Europe and to other parts of the world from there and is now a popular grape in cooler climate regions where it is most able to thrive.

Characteristics of the grape: light to medium-bodied, acidic, grapefruit rind, peach, apricot, canteloupe, honeysuckle, white pepper

  • Winter's Hill Estate Dundee Hills Pinot Blanc 2012

    Snoothrank:

Light nose that doesn't offer much. Very funky, oily, dirty mouth feel at first, although that does blow off/mute over time. Leaves pineapple and mango flavors. Acidic finish infused with lychee. Read More

  • I asked in another thread about recommendation for the Okanagan Valley area of British Columbia, but now I'm asking for up-to-date stories about an area closer to (my) home. I have a family gathering in The Ojai/Santa Barbara area next month, and was wondering who has recommendations about particularly good wines and winery visits in that area t... Read More

  • Would definitely be interested in hearing what people think are the best wineries, and wines, in the Okanagan. Hopefully with an explanation why. Have a good friend going for an extended stay, based in Kelowna, in a month or so, and it'd be nice to be able to offer some pointers. She and her husband drink a lot of New Zealand sauvignon blanc,... Read More

  • I went on a tour of Sokol Blosser which was given complimentary and by a tour guide who was so amazing and inspirational.  I saw a couple of lady bugs on the vine and by some cursed desire, I unfortunately googled lady bug + vineyards to see if they eat predator bugs.  I found numerous articles on lady bugs getting crushed into wine and tainting... • This is a tough one for me. There is a growing wine industry in Arizona and several wineries are nationally recognized. Unfortunately, the value is just not there. I have tasted some good wine in Arizona, but I can find comparable quality wines from Sonoma at less cost. Do I pay the extra and support my local wineries???Actually, I face this cho... Read More

  • Our last day was supposed to be a half day with us getting on the road by lunchtime.  We had an appointment first to meet with Mark Neal at his home/winery on Howell Mountain.  It's a very curvy drive with some spectacular views down onto Napa Valley.  He's up near Ladera.  It's a beautiful property and Mark was just finishing up with another co...
