Pinot Blanc

Name of varietal: Pinot Blanc

Common synonyms: Weissburgunder, Klevner, Feher Burgundi, Pinot Bianco, Rulandske Bile, Rulandske biele, Blanc Vrai

Parentage of the grape: genetic mutation of Pinot Noir

History of the grape: Pinot Blanc was first grown in Burgundy and Champagne, France, and can be traced by some sources as far back as the 1st century. For a long time, little distinction was made between it and Chardonnay, however a number of vintners who knew what they were doing began producing it as a varietal release. It eventually came to prominence in the Alsace region, where it is one of the four most common grapes grown there. It made its way across Europe and to other parts of the world from there and is now a popular grape in cooler climate regions where it is most able to thrive.

Characteristics of the grape: light to medium-bodied, acidic, grapefruit rind, peach, apricot, canteloupe, honeysuckle, white pepper

Got a sweet room at a place in St. Helena and I'm looking for recommendations of what the best places are to taste. I plan on spending at least two days in the Valley tasting, with a day trip out to Santa Cruz mountain... Read More

  • Brown Brothers Everton Chardonnay Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio NV

    Snoothrank:

Very good general-purpose white wine, great for aperitif or with food. Not too much oak, quaffs agreeably. Its price means it's not what I'd call excellent value for money, but it is worth spending the extra few pence on the bottle. Read More

    Snoothrank:

Imagine, if you will, a little tiny vine of Pinot Grigio, left alone in a strange land. Until one day, the Riesling family came along, and felt bad for the poor little Pinot Grigio vine. So they picked him up, wrapped their arms around him, and they all now live happily ever after in the Alsatian soils of Zind Humbrecht.Least... that's what I ... Read More

  • What is terroir. Well it is certainly a point of contention.Loosely stated it is a French concept, the entire phrase is " Gout de Terroir" or, literally, taste of earth, that implies that items, when well produced, express some unique attributes that represent a "sense of place", a more figurative translation of the phrase. So what does that real... • Wine is becoming more about what YOU like and a whole lot less about what industry shills are plugging as the next big thing. One question I've been hearing of late has been: Where is wine headed this summer? Well let me just start off by saying that where wine, and more importantly wine appreciation, is going, is not just a trend for this summer... Read More
