Pinot Blanc

Name of varietal: Pinot Blanc
Common synonyms: Weissburgunder, Klevner, Feher Burgundi, Pinot Bianco, Rulandske Bile, Rulandske biele, Blanc Vrai
Parentage of the grape: genetic mutation of Pinot Noir
History of the grape: Pinot Blanc was first grown in Burgundy and Champagne, France, and can be traced by some sources as far back as the 1st century. For a long time, little distinction was made between it and Chardonnay, however a number of vintners who knew what they were doing began producing it as a varietal release. It eventually came to prominence in the Alsace region, where it is one of the four most common grapes grown there. It made its way across Europe and to other parts of the world from there and is now a popular grape in cooler climate regions where it is most able to thrive.
Characteristics of the grape: light to medium-bodied, acidic, grapefruit rind, peach, apricot, canteloupe, honeysuckle, white pepper

  • The wife & I are making our first trip to Napa for a two day excursion.  We have been doing a lot of research, including reading up on the previous forum posts, thanks Honda John for your informative essay!  We're a little worried about going during the summer, and on a weekend, but it was the only time it worked for us, especially since we live... • Regaleali Bianco Secco 2008

This is the second time I am writing a review of this wine. Drinking the 2008. It's been open for about 3 days. It's still smooth and crisp. It doesn't seem to have the floral bouquet, but it's totally drinkable and totally enjoyable. Read More

  • Outside of Italy or an Italian family winery elsewhere, how does a winery make the choice, do we suppose, whether to call it gris or grigio?  CA has both.  The pacific NW seems to exclusively have gris.  Other new world areas seem to be mixed.  Interesting. Read More

  • Being a fan of Pinot Noir from Burgundy, Cabernet and Merlot from the left and right banks of Bordeaux and Rhone varietals from, you guessed it, the Rhone valley, I've had trouble finding wines that I really like from California. Sure there have been a number of very good, and occasionally great, bottles, but my experience has been about a 20% a... Read More

This wine is pretty good. I prefer the "relax" brand from Schmitt Sohne. I really like the German rieslings, and this one it up there with wines I would recommend. The quality is great for the price. Read More

  • Humberto Canale Torrontés Alto Valle del Rio Negro Canale Black River 2008

I've only recently started to try Torrontes. While red wine is 9 out of 10 times my preference, and Pinot Grigio is my go-to white when I do in fact drink white, I felt it was time to try something different. Torrontes made sense. Less oakey and buttery than Chardonnay, and not as sweet as a Sauvignon Blanc or Riesling, this is a great white ... Read More
