Pinot Blanc

Name of varietal: Pinot Blanc

Common synonyms: Weissburgunder, Klevner, Feher Burgundi, Pinot Bianco, Rulandske Bile, Rulandske biele, Blanc Vrai

Parentage of the grape: genetic mutation of Pinot Noir

History of the grape: Pinot Blanc was first grown in Burgundy and Champagne, France, and can be traced by some sources as far back as the 1st century. For a long time, little distinction was made between it and Chardonnay, however a number of vintners who knew what they were doing began producing it as a varietal release. It eventually came to prominence in the Alsace region, where it is one of the four most common grapes grown there. It made its way across Europe and to other parts of the world from there and is now a popular grape in cooler climate regions where it is most able to thrive.

Characteristics of the grape: light to medium-bodied, acidic, grapefruit rind, peach, apricot, canteloupe, honeysuckle, white pepper

  • So what's in that nasty looking container? Watered down pinot blanc?Sorry to hear you got knocked down by that bug to the extent you had to take a break in a hospital bed. This winter's cold/flu virus has been a bad bug all around, with many evolving to pneumonia thanks to the bacterial cohorts and minions it brings along. But glad to hear you're... Read More

  • Inexpensive Italian whites always taste a little bitter to me but Collegiata makes a great Pinot Grigio for under $10. Sauv Blanc we do a couple, Kim Crawford is a local standard and I found a good but simple French one called Palissade for under $10. How about South African Chenin Blanc they are pretty reliable at a lower price point just like ... Read More

  • Fox, the Schram Mirabelle is up there with the worst wines I've tasted! Would not buy another but would sip again if poured just to confirm if it was a bad bottle or not.It is a good time to plan these things out, and sounds like you had a great experience. People coming up to you years later is definitely a feather in your cap, hoping for a sim... Read More

  • We cooked up some excellent shrimp etouffee this evening and was contemplating ... Decided to break out this Pinot Blanc from our latest trip out west. We really enjoyed the tasting room at Alma Rosa. Even though it is situated in an industrial park, they've done an fantastic job with the layout and atmosphere here. The wines are fairly awesom... • Had a fun tasting matchup, another in the series of helping a young couple pick out their wedding wines. Schramsberg was my first thought, but I think they may have balked at the price (our local has a great deal @ $27), so we went ahead and set up a tasting along with a Roederer Estate, which sells closer to the $20 level.Started out with the R... • @DVOGLER....."The great thing is we all have the freedom to think whatever the hell we like about anything.  I'm not going to try and convince Mr Wino of anything.  I'd mitigate my opinion that there is good and bad wines to "not all wines are equal".  His point is that a wines' goodness or badness is strictly the taster's opinion.  If not all w... • If you can include French, you can get your distributor's rep to bring some Cotes du Rhone and some Bordeaux and somewhere in there, you can find something good for under $15, definitely under $20--maybe even a village-level Cotes du Rhone like a Cairanne or Seguret; you can also get some Languedocs and other things, but you need to taste them a... • Hi everybody I'm a small store owner at the edge of the rust belt, my customers rarely spend over $20 for a bottle, and I am looking to improve my selection a bit beyond what is here now. If you have a minute to help a guy out let me know what you think are the best wines that usually sell for $20 or less. Thanks ! Read More

  • A good question, that brings out various perspectives on knowledge and taste that don't always get addressed. Have a few questions to further things along, if we care to continue the discussion:What kind of pinot have you had? From where and what labels and vintages? If CA pinot then that leads in certain directions. Does the drinker also like gr... Read More

  • Heading off to big bear this afternoon...packing a few wines. Least excited about the Oregon Pinot, though part of that is due to haphazard storage, it's been passive in my kitchen for some months.
