Picpoul

Name of varietal: Picpoul (Piquepoul)

Common synonyms: Avello, Avillo, Extra, Feher Piquepoul, Languedocien, Picapoll, Picapolla, Picapulla, Picpoul, Picpoul de Pinet

Parentage of the grape: Unknown.

History of the grape: Wine has been made from this grape since at least the 17th century, when it was cited as “Piquepoul,” or “lip stinger,” presumably because of its high natural acidity. It comes in Noir, Gris, and Blanc versions. The white is the most planted, but it’s common to see all three in the same vineyard. Picpoul was popular throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, and was once a common base for vermouth, but lost a lot of vineyard area after the phylloxera epidemic. It is now regaining popularity, and its main AC, Picpoul de Pinet, is becoming better-known.

Picpoul Noir is most common as a minor ingredient in the Chateaneuf du Pape blend.

Characteristics of the grape: lemon, mineral, high acidity, full body

  • In Wales at the moment on a short break settling my daughter into her second year at Swansea University.Yesterday I popped into Supermarket in Swansea and thought I would buy a sneaky few bottles before the 25% off offer finishes. • Halter Ranch White Rhone Blend Paso Robles Cotes de Paso Blanc 2010

    Snoothrank:

Nice clear straw color. It really is straw color--a faint tint of orange. Very floral, fruity nose--I don't smell honey, but I think of honey. Pretty neutral on the tip of the tongue. Things don't start to happen until further back. I get some fruit--pears--and, also, some mineral to rein in the fruit. We're having grilled chicken for dinn... Read More

  • Halter Ranch White Rhone Blend Paso Robles Cotes de Paso Blanc 2010

    Snoothrank:

This is very fruity on the nose with a sweet character. Lots of sweet pear, peach and slightly tropical fruit notes with a floral accent. Very smooth on entry if a bit loose, this delivers a nice, gentle mouth feel along with lightly sweet pear and peach flavors, with an intensely floral inner mouth perfume. Nice minerality flairs on the finish,... Read More

  • Ormarine Picpoul de Pinet 2010

    Snoothrank:

Sitting - as I might imagine it - on the Mediterranean with a refreshing glass of local white, this thirst-quenching, somewhat neutral and strangely salty wine would be the very ticket. The scent is like freshly picked Thompson Seedless grapes with a hint of coarsely ground salt. The flavor is muted, but has fruit enough to refresh - with a li... Read More
