Picpoul

Name of varietal: Picpoul (Piquepoul)

Common synonyms: Avello, Avillo, Extra, Feher Piquepoul, Languedocien, Picapoll, Picapolla, Picapulla, Picpoul, Picpoul de Pinet

Parentage of the grape: Unknown.

History of the grape: Wine has been made from this grape since at least the 17th century, when it was cited as “Piquepoul,” or “lip stinger,” presumably because of its high natural acidity. It comes in Noir, Gris, and Blanc versions. The white is the most planted, but it’s common to see all three in the same vineyard. Picpoul was popular throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, and was once a common base for vermouth, but lost a lot of vineyard area after the phylloxera epidemic. It is now regaining popularity, and its main AC, Picpoul de Pinet, is becoming better-known.

Picpoul Noir is most common as a minor ingredient in the Chateaneuf du Pape blend.

Characteristics of the grape: lemon, mineral, high acidity, full body

Very similar to the '09 with a rich flavor profile of ripened apricot and dark spice, slightly darker fruit, a little older but still drinking very well. Read More

    Snoothrank:

Excellent white Rhone blend from Paso Robles. This is carried by the bigger white grapes of Roussanne and Marsanne which contribute a darker stonier fruit flavor and the aromatics of the viognier which add a nice floral touch. Read More

  • Domaine Felines Jourdan Picpoul de Pinet 2011

    Snoothrank:

The name translates to "lip stinger" and how accurate it is. This is everything I want in a white wine from the laser-like acidity to the full range of citrus fruits. I'll admit to being surprised this came out of Languedoc. Read More

  • Château Mont-Redon Côtes du Rhône 2010

    Snoothrank:

Vibrant black pepper and leather notes on the nose, over rich red fruit. On the palate, a nice peppery edge to the red and black berry. Good minerality. Nice wine. 87 pts.5/18/13 Read More

  • Hugues de Beauvignac Coteaux du Languedoc Picpoul-de-Pinet 2011

    Snoothrank:

Some apply aromas and some hints of earthiness. Very light and refreshing on the palate. Some stone fruit flavors compete with some minerality. There is certainly nothing to object to, here. Similarly, it is not a terribly exciting wine. A good picnic wine, though. US$8.99 at Total Wines. Read More
