Picpoul

Name of varietal: Picpoul (Piquepoul)

Common synonyms: Avello, Avillo, Extra, Feher Piquepoul, Languedocien, Picapoll, Picapolla, Picapulla, Picpoul, Picpoul de Pinet

Parentage of the grape: Unknown.

History of the grape: Wine has been made from this grape since at least the 17th century, when it was cited as “Piquepoul,” or “lip stinger,” presumably because of its high natural acidity. It comes in Noir, Gris, and Blanc versions. The white is the most planted, but it’s common to see all three in the same vineyard. Picpoul was popular throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, and was once a common base for vermouth, but lost a lot of vineyard area after the phylloxera epidemic. It is now regaining popularity, and its main AC, Picpoul de Pinet, is becoming better-known.

Picpoul Noir is most common as a minor ingredient in the Chateaneuf du Pape blend.

Characteristics of the grape: lemon, mineral, high acidity, full body

  • Domaine Font Mars Picpoul 2012

    Snoothrank:

Tight and slightly herbal on the nose with subtle shadings of dried herb stem floating over a base of flinty minerality. This is lean and fresh in the mouth and very acid driven with some crap apple and lime pith fruit and subtle herbal shadings offering a bit of complexity. Gaining a little richness on the backend, and some notes of white peach... Read More

  • Domaine de Cantagrils Picpoul de Pinet 2012

    Snoothrank:

Dusty and spicy on the nose this shows a fine mineral base with gently drying apple blossoms and crisp apple fruit on the nose. Bright, fresh and acid driven in the mouth, this has a fair amount of weight and richness to it yet remains crisp and focused with slightly creamy apple and tart peach flavors on the palate. The acid drives the long fin... Read More

Really good white Rhone from Paso. Lemon drops, fresh, clean and crisp with excellent mouth watering acidity but also nicely balanced with a touch of oily texture. Great alternative to pinot gris and sauv blanc. Read More
