Picpoul

Name of varietal: Picpoul (Piquepoul)

Common synonyms: Avello, Avillo, Extra, Feher Piquepoul, Languedocien, Picapoll, Picapolla, Picapulla, Picpoul, Picpoul de Pinet

Parentage of the grape: Unknown.

History of the grape: Wine has been made from this grape since at least the 17th century, when it was cited as “Piquepoul,” or “lip stinger,” presumably because of its high natural acidity. It comes in Noir, Gris, and Blanc versions. The white is the most planted, but it’s common to see all three in the same vineyard. Picpoul was popular throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, and was once a common base for vermouth, but lost a lot of vineyard area after the phylloxera epidemic. It is now regaining popularity, and its main AC, Picpoul de Pinet, is becoming better-known.

Picpoul Noir is most common as a minor ingredient in the Chateaneuf du Pape blend.

Characteristics of the grape: lemon, mineral, high acidity, full body

  • Domaine de la Mordorée Lirac Blanc Cuvée de la Reine des Bois 2008

    Snoothrank:

This wine is a blend of Viognier, Roussane, Marsanne, Grenache Blanc, Picpoul, Bourboulenc and Clairette. Clear and light lemon colour. Young and intense on the nose, it is a complex mix of almond, caramelised sugar and there is a good presence of the alcohol. (14%) 25% of the wine is fermented in oak barrel, which gives a lively and complex pal... Read More

  • I just can't help but feel like both WA and WS are rating wines higher then they have in the past. These thoughts are coming from my true love in wine, Barolo. I remember reading reviews on wines from 1996, 1998, 1999, 2001 (all great vintages) and for some of the best producers in that region I would see scores of 90 - 94 for some of the best... Read More

  • Arnaud Gaujal Picpoul de Pinet 2008

    Snoothrank:

This wine is very deserving of a 4/5. I see this as an excellent exemplar of the Picpoul variety. The color was a nice clear hue. It was nice and crisp. I chose to pair it with an olive spread on a toasted baguette slice. I see now that it would have been better with seafood. It was a little Chablis-esque, but more subtle. I will definite... • I just purchased some wines that I am unfamiliar with. Included is a Gaujal de Saint Bon Picpoul 2008. I know it would probably be great with seafood and oysters in particular. I would like to have my wife share the bottle with me and she is not a seafood fan. Can someone suggest a cheese or other appetizer that might be paired well with pic... Read More
