Name of varietal: Picpoul (Piquepoul)

Common synonyms: Avello, Avillo, Extra, Feher Piquepoul, Languedocien, Picapoll, Picapolla, Picapulla, Picpoul, Picpoul de Pinet

Parentage of the grape: Unknown.

History of the grape: Wine has been made from this grape since at least the 17th century, when it was cited as “Piquepoul,” or “lip stinger,” presumably because of its high natural acidity. It comes in Noir, Gris, and Blanc versions. The white is the most planted, but it’s common to see all three in the same vineyard. Picpoul was popular throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, and was once a common base for vermouth, but lost a lot of vineyard area after the phylloxera epidemic. It is now regaining popularity, and its main AC, Picpoul de Pinet, is becoming better-known.

Picpoul Noir is most common as a minor ingredient in the Chateaneuf du Pape blend.

Characteristics of the grape: lemon, mineral, high acidity, full body

  • La Chapelle de la Bastide Picpoul 2008

This affordable French white definitely had not-so-subtle hints of citrus, and it paired well with some seared scallops. Perhaps a tad too sweet for my tastes (I prefer my whites to be as dry as possible), but with the right meal this wine could be a winner. In addition, it would work quite well as a sipping wine...a cordial or even aperitif. Read More

This was an excellent after dinner or all by itself wine. It has a lovely fruity flavor without being too dry. It is not a heavy wine, and it is excellent for the price. The screwtop was a little offputting when buying, but it was well worth the risk. Read More

  • A "groovy autumn find" from my site www.winewriting.com:2005 Riesling Domaine Dopff (Dopff au Moulin, 12.5%) - lovely nose with floral white peach and developing linseed oil notes; delicate yet quite intense mouthfeel moving on to oilier texture and flavours, and finishing with subtle underlying mineral bite. • Pomerols Picpoul Pinet H.B 2008

One of the best sub-$10 wines. I agree with the apple and citrus flavors. It has a nice light acidic pop at the beginning. This is a nice light, dry wine that is especially drinkable, especially on a hot summer afternoon. Read More
