Name of varietal: Picpoul (Piquepoul)

Common synonyms: Avello, Avillo, Extra, Feher Piquepoul, Languedocien, Picapoll, Picapolla, Picapulla, Picpoul, Picpoul de Pinet

Parentage of the grape: Unknown.

History of the grape: Wine has been made from this grape since at least the 17th century, when it was cited as “Piquepoul,” or “lip stinger,” presumably because of its high natural acidity. It comes in Noir, Gris, and Blanc versions. The white is the most planted, but it’s common to see all three in the same vineyard. Picpoul was popular throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, and was once a common base for vermouth, but lost a lot of vineyard area after the phylloxera epidemic. It is now regaining popularity, and its main AC, Picpoul de Pinet, is becoming better-known.

Picpoul Noir is most common as a minor ingredient in the Chateaneuf du Pape blend.

Characteristics of the grape: lemon, mineral, high acidity, full body

Read More

  • Domaine Felines Jourdan Picpoul de Pinet 2008

"Picpoul de Pinet stands out as a source of white wine in the Coteaux du Languedoc, where red otherwise dominates. This is a fairly classic example. Minerals and sea salt on the nose of this moderately pale wine, with hints of shells, green vegetables and melons. A little weight on the palate, but otherwise this is a fresh, whistle-clean white w... Read More

  • Summer is here and what could be better than enjoying it on some of the ... to ... to choose from -- a crisp Picpoul de Pinet or lush Grenache Blanc fits the bill -- but to put me in that Mediterranean summer mood, nothing works better than a fine rose, and Tavel is always one of the finest! "This little white from the south of France is dry, clean and fresh with yellow ... in the nose and mouth. The 'Picpoul de Pinet' varietal is used to make light white wines and Armagnac. The grapes for this excellent Picpoul are harvested on the slopes of the Languedoc facing the Mediterranean, and the sunny climate of the region gives the grap... Read More

A clear, light gold in colour. Fresh aromas of peaches, apricots and citrus fruits. The texture is very crisp with good acidity. The flavours are of stone fruits, white flowers with a dash of lemon and lime. Very bright and cleansing finish. Read More
