Petit Manseng

This white wine-producing grape is being grown on small acreages in Virginia, notably by Chrysallis Vineyards. The vine originates in the Jurancon region of southwestern France, where it is highly regarded. Wines made from this variety in the Jurancon are typically of exceptionally high quality and can be very aromatic. Aromas of the wines are suggestive of cinnamon, peaches and pineapple. The best and most famous wines from the region are the Jurancon Moelleux. These are sweet wines, which are made from the small thick grapes that have been left on the vine well into November in order to concentrate natural sugars. This coupled with the grapes' natural high acidity, creates the ideal combination for great dessert wine production. The vine's loose clusters, and the high pergola training it receives in the Jurancon, limits Petit Manseng's susceptibility to rot. This is ideal for production in the humid conditions of Virginia. Unfortunately, the vine also requires an extended growing season. Only areas where Read more »

  • Domaine Poujo Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh 2013

    Snoothrank:

I bought this bottle of wine for eight pounds when I visited the London France ... ... 60% gros manseng and 40% petit manseng harvested late to make it sweet.. I started my bottle last night with my supper of salad and cheese and I did enjoy it.It is certainly sweet almost like syrup or honey and there is a melon, peach and apricot style fruit ... Read More

  • I do recall, OT.  That was the first time I'd ever heard of that grape ... ... is that the demand for Petit Manseng wine has to be darned close to zero.  I have to believe that most farmers are interested in an economic return. If I know I can sell all the Chardonnay grapes that I can pick, even if it's to Bronco or K-J, why would I mess with ... Read More

  • Jones Von Drehle Petit Manseng 2013

    Snoothrank:

This is a NC wine from our beloved Yadkin Valley AVA. Light gold in color, there's some interesting floral and petrol aromatics not unlike a slightly older Riesling. That's where most of the similarities stop however, as this is more tropical on the palate along with dried apricot, some nice acidity but with a touch of bitterness on the back end... Read More

  • Pearmund Cellars 2013 Petit Manseng is exceptional. This wine exhibits lovely aromatics and a great pineapple/grapefruit combo on the palate, The wine is 100% Petit Manseng grown in Virginia. A lovely wine and it is worth the trip to Warrenton to buy a bottle,
