Name of varietal: Palomino

Common synonyms: Listan (France), Fransdurif (South Africa), Perrum (Portugal)

Parentage of the grape: native to southern Spain (Andalusia)

History of the grape: Palomino is split into three types: Palomino Fino, Palomino de Jerez and Palomino Basto. All of them are indigenous to Spain, with Palomino Fino one of the most widely planted white grapes in Spain. Legend has it that it was named after a knight in the court of 13th century King Alfonso X. After the Phylloxera crisis of the late 1800s, many native Spanish varietals were replaced with Palomino Fino because it is so easy to grow and adapt. But a resurgence in traditional indigenous white wines emerged in the 1970s and 80s, and Palomino was replaced by the likes of Verdejo and Macabeo and others, except in Jerez where Palomino continues to be a major player in Sherry production (for more information, please see Jerez). The grape is very low in acid and color, and tends to oxidize easily. For this reason, it is Read more »

  • I grew up on a farm.  Farmers kill themselves to survive and we support each other by buying locally.  I am from CA and I have been drinking wine predominately from Napa, Sonoma and Carneros since I was 21.  The point is, when I am studying for this WSET exam and being told that the best expression of every premium wine is found in some AOC in F... • Serramarrocco Grillo del Barone 2008

Grillo is an indigenous grape of Sicily used to make Marsala and finds it way into dishes like chicken Marsala and Zabaglione. It is also used as a blending grape but in this wine it stands beautifully alone. The wine has a beautiful golden color, the nose is bright with scents of lemon and bright sea air and whiffs of cumin and mint. • Bodegas Hidalgo Jerez-Xeres-Sherry Manzanilla la Gitana 2009

Bitter finish akin to drinking puréed radicchio. Maybe it would be better with food? Yeast, yeast, yeast. Densely packed - currants, mineral, oak. Long after taste. Admittedly complex, but was turned off by the taste so didn't savor it sufficiently to say anything more insightful. Read More
