Name of varietal: Palomino

Common synonyms: Listan (France), Fransdurif (South Africa), Perrum (Portugal)

Parentage of the grape: native to southern Spain (Andalusia)

History of the grape: Palomino is split into three types: Palomino Fino, Palomino de Jerez and Palomino Basto. All of them are indigenous to Spain, with Palomino Fino one of the most widely planted white grapes in Spain. Legend has it that it was named after a knight in the court of 13th century King Alfonso X. After the Phylloxera crisis of the late 1800s, many native Spanish varietals were replaced with Palomino Fino because it is so easy to grow and adapt. But a resurgence in traditional indigenous white wines emerged in the 1970s and 80s, and Palomino was replaced by the likes of Verdejo and Macabeo and others, except in Jerez where Palomino continues to be a major player in Sherry production (for more information, please see Jerez). The grape is very low in acid and color, and tends to oxidize easily. For this reason, it is Read more »

  • I just got back from an absolutely amazing 8 day trip to Spain. While staying in Seville, my wife and I did a day trip to Jerez and went to the Tio Pepe Bodega: great experience, they have been making Sherry there since 1835! Simply amazing. Rich, layered fruit, not overly crisp with some incredible weight that wasn't overpowering or buttery. Had some amazing golden delicious apple and honey to it. Enjoyed with a plethora of riches from the sea @ Esca in New York. Read More

Bitter finish akin to drinking puréed radicchio. Maybe it would be better with food? Yeast, yeast, yeast. Densely packed - currants, mineral, oak. Long after taste. Admittedly complex, but was turned off by the taste so didn't savor it sufficiently to say anything more insightful. Read More

Alvear says it's a great mid-morning aperitif. We agree, if you like to wake up to liquid peanut brittle that finishes like a bag of caramel popcorn. Morning or night, this is a big, bold sherry. Read More

  • Emilio Lustau Solera Reserva Old East India Emilio Lustau S.A NV

Delicious. Purchased based on Parker's 94 rating. I'll admit, it took me till the second glass to fully appreciate this wine. Quite dark to look at makes it interesting to swirl in the glass under some light. Very spicy, both on the nose and tongue. Nutty and hints of caramel. I'll give it a 92 and will be adding more to my collection. Read More
