Palomino

Name of varietal: Palomino

Common synonyms: Listan (France), Fransdurif (South Africa), Perrum (Portugal)

Parentage of the grape: native to southern Spain (Andalusia)

History of the grape: Palomino is split into three types: Palomino Fino, Palomino de Jerez and Palomino Basto. All of them are indigenous to Spain, with Palomino Fino one of the most widely planted white grapes in Spain. Legend has it that it was named after a knight in the court of 13th century King Alfonso X. After the Phylloxera crisis of the late 1800s, many native Spanish varietals were replaced with Palomino Fino because it is so easy to grow and adapt. But a resurgence in traditional indigenous white wines emerged in the 1970s and 80s, and Palomino was replaced by the likes of Verdejo and Macabeo and others, except in Jerez where Palomino continues to be a major player in Sherry production (for more information, please see Jerez). The grape is very low in acid and color, and tends to oxidize easily. For this reason, it is Read more »

  • Paulo Laureano Classico Regional Alentejano 2010

    Snoothrank:

Imported by: Wine in Motion NJTrincadeira 40%, Aragonez 40%, Alfrocheiro 20% A bit tight on the nose but showing lovely floral and spicy fruit aromas that are fresh and elegant with a growing sense of fruitiness as it sits in the glass. Broad in the mouth, and clean with an initial blast of fruit that makes this feel a bit soft, but the structu... Read More

    Snoothrank:

Sherry reminds me of church; of fumbling in my parents liquor cabinet the first time they left me home without a baby-sitter, and spitting back the contents of whatever bottles I was brave enough to sample. However, 25 years later, I'm delighted by this sweet, musty, caramelly and invigorating wine. So what if each sip makes me flash back to the... Read More

  • Bedrock Wine Co. Evangelho Vineyard Heritage 2012

    Snoothrank:

Whoa, very fruity on introduction to the tongue--lots of raspberry, some acidic tropical hints like, maybe, papaya, maybe even some citrus. Noticeable sweetness around the edge of the tongue. Not a particularly "jammy" Zin. Medium bodied, easy to drink by itself, but it might be a challenge for some food pairings. US$30.00 from the winery. Read More

  • Fox asked me the other day if I was going to start a thread on this years growing season. I've been real busy with other things and haven't had much time to focus on the specifics of the 2013 season. But, things are getting off to an early start due to unusually warm Spring weather and a mild Winter where the Sierra snowpack is only 17% of norma... Read More
