Parentage of the grape: Norton is a hybrid between Vitis aestivalis and Vitis labrusca linne

History of the grape: Norton was first created in the experimental garden of the eccentric Dr. Daniel Norton in 1820s Richmond, VA. His intention was to produce a truly American grape variety that could withstand harsh climates while producing palatable wine. In this, he succeeded where everyone from the Jamestown colonists to Thomas Jefferson failed. Having been picked up by an important seed catalog, the grape made its way west to Missouri, where German immigrants adopted it and began producing quality wine from it.
