It sounds like there are a lot more out ther now, so it'll be interesting to see what else might appear in this thread. California CFs are a different breed from the French, as you so aptly describe. I've had a lot of Chinon (many quite delicious, while the lessers are, yes, too herbaceous), and some of the delicious Cheval Blanc (of recent American fame from the styrofoam cup in a diner in Sideways, where the Giamatti character drowns himself in his favorite bottle--hilarious to me because of all his previous moaning about the horrors of merlot, where Cheval Blanc can have nearly as much merlot in it as CF). And innumerable other bottles from Bordeaux where it has been a lesser part of the blend (and that's basically how I've tended to view the grape, as good in blends, which can take care of the hollowness you describe). But I try not to think too much about them when I drink New World CF, or I'm too often dissatisfied. I try to enjoy all that fruit and think about the piece of Napa, or wherever, that it's from. One thing I like about the Soter that I mention above, is how it's blended with cabernet suavignon and malbec. All that meatiness, coffee and chocolate, cedar-and-spice box from the CF, but also the black fruits, flowers and structure that come from the malbec and CS. It's no Cheval Blanc, but a very interesting effort in its own right    (hide)

  Wow, sounds like you had an awesome time. I'm also heading there next weekend and would really appreciate it if you could post your reviews on the different wineries! Our goal is to hit up 15+ so it's going to be quite crazy :)

  Interesting ... I've had some Meritage wines from Niagara peninsula where the Cab Franc really shows but I'll let you know after I taste a few this weekend if the 07 vintage was weakish.   Whew, glad to hear you designated a driver for that one. If nothing else I'd be tired at the end of such a marathon day. I'll have to look out for that Konzelmann's Riesling. I haven't had many sparkling rieslings in the past. The Inniskillin is definitely a gem. Welcome to Snooth!

Konzelmann's 2007 Sparkling Riesling was a standout, along with Inniskillin's 2006 Olympic Vidal Icewine (I'm usually not a fan of ice wine) and Palatine Hills' 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Icewine. I took home 4 bottles on this trip, all from Palatine. I've been there before but this was my first purchase.    (hide)

I've misplaced my Taste the Season passport (showing the wines at each place) but will send a review. My friends and I would never had made it to so many places if it hadn't been for the Taste event: each participating winery offers a selected wine paired with food. Our sober driver is a wiz at getting around NOTL - she even makes a spreadsheet (accountant) of the spots we'll visit, rating them by the type of wine (red or white) and perceived like of food being served.    (hide)
