Negroamaro

Name of varietal: Negroamaro

Common synonyms: Nero Amaro, Abbruzzese

Parentage of the grape: indigenous to Puglia, Italy

History of the grape: The name is a combination of the Italian words for “black” and “bitter,” however, the latter description is more of a description of its uniquely concentrated spicebox characteristics. It’s a grape that’s been enjoyed in some form since at least the 6th century in Puglia, Italy. It’s been an enduring varietal in the region since it’s easy to grow in abundance and resistant to diseases and low rainfall.

The wines from Salento are considered the best examples of wines made from Negroamaro. It plays a key structural role in Salice Salentino, a popular red blend it shares with Malvasia Nera, Montepulciano and Sangiovese.

Characteristics of the grape: deep, dark, medium tannins, soft, round, blackberries, black currants, clove, nutmeg, allspice Read more »

  • Leone de Castris Salice Salentino Riserva 2009

    Snoothrank:

Continuing a virtual trip into Puglia ... into better DOC country than usual for this heel of Italy... the wine at hand greets the nose as thickly vinous, medicinal and blackcurrant. The entry is quite smooth with placid tannin but a little extra warmth (alcohol) overlaying the slightly bitter blackcurrant flavours. Flavour lingers long, with... Read More

  • Luccarelli Negroamaro Puglia Igp 2012

    Snoothrank:

The Vancouver BC wine reviewer (and former CBC disc jockey) Jürgen Gothe recently reviewed this IGP wine which presents Kirsch and treacle-like notes to the nose. The slight sense of over-ripe cherries continues on entry, but tempered by a slight acridness plus medicinal qualities. Unexpected balance and medium finish for this price. A bit syrup... Read More

  • Leone de Castris Salice Salentino Rosso Maiana 2008

    Snoothrank:

A somewhat different Italian red blend of Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera. It starts out a little thin and metallic with a hint of licorice. There's a good bit of earthiness on the mid-palate along with dried black plums and raisin. Read More

    Snoothrank:

I'm sorry to say I'm not a wine drinker and I don't drink wine very often, but ... a bottle of Masseria Cavalo Negroamaro 2009. I love this wine. It is so smooth. I don't know how to describe wine in a colorful and provocative manner, but it is really good Read More

Black pepper and other spices. Well balanced. No hint of tannin. Maybe more time breathing would have reduced the pepper. Surprisingly strong for an Italian wine. Read More
