Nebbiolo

Name of varietal: Nebbiolo

Common synonyms: Spanna, Picutener and Chiavennasca.

Parentage of the grape: Debatable whether it is indigenous to Piedmont or first plantings in Valtellina in Lombardy, Italy.

History of the grape: Two schools of thought exist as to the origins of Nebbiolo (which means “little fog” either for the Piedmontese autumn weather or the frosty appearance of the mature grapes). One is that it is indigenous to Piedmont, Italy. The other is that it was first planted in Valtellina, a valley within the Lombardy region, where it was then brought to Piedmont. There is some suggestion that in the 1st century, Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder gave high regard to a wine made in what is now the Barolo region, attributing to it similar characteristics associated with Nebbiolo. In the 13th century, there is reference to a wine called “nebili” from a grape that was growing near Rivoli outside of Turin. More concrete written history Read more »

Nebbiolo on Snooth

  • Tenuta Rocca Nebbiolo D Alba 2004

    Snoothrank:

This wine really opens up and develops over time. Dusty nose of spices and raspberries. Very pretty fruit with a sour cherry backbone. Very versatile with a bunch of different dishes that were eaten with this wine. Even tasted ok with artichoke. Read More

  • Michele Chiarlo 2005

    Snoothrank:

Like most wines from the Piemonte region, Michele Chiarlo's Barbera d'Asti is rich with its notes of tobacco and cherry, and pairs extremely well with any stuffed pasta or gnocchi--especially truffle or ricotta cheese-filled pastas. It's also relatively easy to find here in the U.S. and well-priced, and is a wine that my friends in Piemonte regul... • Azienda Ceretto s.r.l. Barolo Grignore 1971

    Snoothrank:

Dusty on the nose with a touch of artificial fruit flavor and lots of powdered sugar that reminded of a bag of crushed PEZ candy. There were a few nice hints of nettle that added freshness. In the mouth this was really attenuated with moutains of acidity though with food this revealed pure, lean and refined red fruits with nuanced sand herb and ... Read More

  • Francesco Rinaldi & Figli Barolo 1974

    Snoothrank:

Dusty and evolved with bookbinders glue, chocolate pound cake, rum raisin ice cream and light wrapper tobacco leaf tones, except it didn't smell quite as good as all that. It's a touch hot in the mouth and has good length and a nice succulence but not enough flesh to conceal this still rather substantial strucutreal componenets. Seaweed and herb... Read More

  • Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 1985

    Snoothrank:

Spicy and rich with subtle white pepper, Violette, nettle and mineral salts all enmeshed in rich, slightly jammy raspberry fruits. The fruit is still so plush in the mouth temperd and supported by fine tannins and great acids. there is an appley freshness and subtle astringency on the backend then funghi, tobacco, and dried rose notes on the lon... • Cordero di Montezemolo Barolo Monfalletto 1971

    Snoothrank:

Dusty, meaty and slow to open with a fair touch of dried herb and seaweed up front but slowly the candied black raspberry tones grow and flesh out a frame of mossy greenness, beef bouillon and a lovely mint nuance. The entry is brightly acidic and leads to a slightly spicy mid-palate rich with red fruits and a touch of pink peppercorn. The finis... Read More
