Nebbiolo

Name of varietal: Nebbiolo

Common synonyms: Spanna, Picutener and Chiavennasca.

Parentage of the grape: Debatable whether it is indigenous to Piedmont or first plantings in Valtellina in Lombardy, Italy.

History of the grape: Two schools of thought exist as to the origins of Nebbiolo (which means “little fog” either for the Piedmontese autumn weather or the frosty appearance of the mature grapes). One is that it is indigenous to Piedmont, Italy. The other is that it was first planted in Valtellina, a valley within the Lombardy region, where it was then brought to Piedmont. There is some suggestion that in the 1st century, Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder gave high regard to a wine made in what is now the Barolo region, attributing to it similar characteristics associated with Nebbiolo. In the 13th century, there is reference to a wine called “nebili” from a grape that was growing near Rivoli outside of Turin. More concrete written history Read more »

Nebbiolo on Snooth

  • Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Torre 2005

    Snoothrank:

A lovely Barbaresco with solid acidity and a cool, composed character featuring crisp cherry, soil and dried floral aromatics. the wine is medium bodied and fairly elegant with small but precise tannins and a taut backend that leads to a long, sneaky finish. Needs a year or two in bottle to really express itself but still delicious even at this ... Read More

  • Castello di Neive Barbaresco 2004

    Snoothrank:

Smoky on the nose with a deep earthen spice and limestone notes. The fruit is still tight on the nose but in the mouth this unfurls seamlessly with fine elegance and low key fruit that is tight and unyielding but builds on the backend with a wonderfully richly fruited finish. thus deserves a few more years in bottle or several hours in a decante... Snoothrank:

terrific potpourri meets jelly belly cotton candy nose with a touch of buttered popcorn. this wine is super light bodied. almost looks like a Rose. the mouthfeel is surprisingly full and creamy. bright acidity with a sour cherry cream pie profile. definitely one of the more unique wines I have had. • Bovio Barolo Rocchettevino 1997

    Snoothrank:

Four hours of decanting did not do this wine justice. Enjoyed over dinner, good, but not remarkable enough to incite me to pick up a pen but Having saved about 12 ounces, for the next day proved to be enlightening. After a total of 24 hours, Bovio's Barolo Rocchettevino 1997 turned from enjoyable to intense. Showing a medium ruby red color wi... Read More

  • Ok, so I've already fallen well behind in posting my notes but let me tell you ... they have always grown some Nebbiolo in the zone but have pushed to make more important wines of late. If this crop was in any way representative they have alot of work to do. Lots of very extracted wines with fruit marked by a warm terroir and with oak that bro... Read More

  • Well my first full day here started with a shower and nice breakfast before ... length and the 2006 langhe Nebbiolo which was great with vibrant herbal tones, wonderful ripe fruit and just enough complexity to make it thoroughly engaging. Can't wait to buy a few bottles. The Monprivato 2003 was showing very well and the 2004 is destined to be ... Read More

  • La Spinetta Rivetti Langhe Nebbiolo Starderi 2004

    Snoothrank:

The '04 "Pin", from La Spinetta REALLY benefitted from a half hour decant. The bled of Barbera & Nebbiolo, as mentioned elsewhere, truly is a "Super Piedmont". The structure of the Nebbiolo lends finesse to an aggressive and prominent display of both fruit and ever-evolving complexity. In truth; I felt like my old friend Nebbiolo was tutoring me ...
