Nebbiolo

Name of varietal: Nebbiolo

Common synonyms: Spanna, Picutener and Chiavennasca.

Parentage of the grape: Debatable whether it is indigenous to Piedmont or first plantings in Valtellina in Lombardy, Italy.

History of the grape: Two schools of thought exist as to the origins of Nebbiolo (which means “little fog” either for the Piedmontese autumn weather or the frosty appearance of the mature grapes). One is that it is indigenous to Piedmont, Italy. The other is that it was first planted in Valtellina, a valley within the Lombardy region, where it was then brought to Piedmont. There is some suggestion that in the 1st century, Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder gave high regard to a wine made in what is now the Barolo region, attributing to it similar characteristics associated with Nebbiolo. In the 13th century, there is reference to a wine called “nebili” from a grape that was growing near Rivoli outside of Turin. More concrete written history Read more »

Nebbiolo on Snooth

  • Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 1982

    Snoothrank:

Young and tarry on the nose. Mauro had asked me when I decanted the wines. When I replied that it had been about 2 hours he told me next time I should consider 5 or 8 hours and in his experience 12-18 hours in a cool cellar is really the ideal time to allow these wines to fully open up! This opened slowly but most likely would have benefited fr... Read More

  • Bruno Giacosa Nebbiolo Nebbiolo d'Alba 2001

    Snoothrank:

A light ruby red color with a slightly orange rim. Initially, bright cherry fruit on the nose with rose petal and a woodsy mushroom undertone. Very pure nose that sang Barbaresco and with time allowed the trademark of tar to rise from this wines bouquet. On the palette, medium bodied with raspberry and cranberry fruit and notes of tobacco on the... Read More

  • Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Villero 2003

    Snoothrank:

This has an intense perfume of smoldering cigar, cigar ash, cherries in alcohol, prune and burnt orange rind. In the mouth there is a lot of weight here with rich fruit flavors and none of the bitter tannins many of these 2003's are showing. Bright and juicy with a lush, round feel and a backend built on extract and ripe tannins. this may lack t... Read More

  • Elvio Cogno Barolo 2003

    Snoothrank:

Some truly wonderful twists and turns on the finish. Deceiving on the color with some lighter shades but some real heft and ballsy mouth feel. Made the meal at Convivio (NYC) that much sweeter. Read More
