Nebbiolo

Name of varietal: Nebbiolo

Common synonyms: Spanna, Picutener and Chiavennasca.

Parentage of the grape: Debatable whether it is indigenous to Piedmont or first plantings in Valtellina in Lombardy, Italy.

History of the grape: Two schools of thought exist as to the origins of Nebbiolo (which means “little fog” either for the Piedmontese autumn weather or the frosty appearance of the mature grapes). One is that it is indigenous to Piedmont, Italy. The other is that it was first planted in Valtellina, a valley within the Lombardy region, where it was then brought to Piedmont. There is some suggestion that in the 1st century, Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder gave high regard to a wine made in what is now the Barolo region, attributing to it similar characteristics associated with Nebbiolo. In the 13th century, there is reference to a wine called “nebili” from a grape that was growing near Rivoli outside of Turin. More concrete written history Read more »

Nebbiolo on Snooth

  • Conterno Giacomo Barolo Cascina Francia 2006

    Snoothrank:

Superb. A wine that confirms my desire to want to move to Piemonte. Luscious. Harmonious. Elegant. Rich. Bejeweled. Quite a stunner. Dark forest floor fruit on the nose seduce you into the wine. Aromatic midpalate broadens the weight in the mouth without making the wine feel heavy. And the finish is soft and complete. Truly spectacula... Read More

  • Gigi Rosso Barolo Arione 2001

    Snoothrank:

Very average wine, lacking in dimension. I've had better for under $10. Do not bother with this particular vintage at least. Read More

  • Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 1980

    Snoothrank:

Decidedly paler, again a trait of the vintage, with a sweet raspberry tone on the nose and initial notes of licorice and dried onion powder segueing into cocoa and espresso foam before finally exploding in the glass with the most profound note of celery! Lithe and balanced in the mouth with resolved tannins that offer just a hint of dusty resist... Read More

  • Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Torre 2010

    Snoothrank:

A light, ruby-colored nebbiolo. The nose is a pungent earthy/cherry mix that almost approaches cough syrup on the palate with it's intensity. Still quite young/tight with a good bit of astringency. Breathing for a day mellowed it out some. Not bad but not great...at least not yet. Read More

  • Barolo Riserva Giuseppe Mascarello 1961

    Snoothrank:

From the subtlety of the 1964 we moved on to the wild power of 1961 with a feral nose rich in tobacco, leather and blue slate tones this was deep and grabbed your attention but lacked the layered complexity and clarity of the 1961. In the mouth this was still tannic and youthful to a degree but the soft acidity give this a more aged feel. There ... Read More

  • Barolo Mascarello Giuseppe 1964

    Snoothrank:

Here we moved on from the great Monprivato Cru to a wine that had grapes from vineyards such as Bussia Soprana, Dardi and Villero added to the mix. This wine was a worry with its incredibly pale color when first decanted. I was upset by what I saw but knowing how old Barolo tends to darken a bit in the glass I still looked forward to trying this... Read More

  • Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 1970

    Snoothrank:

The inaugural vintage of Monprivato and as Mauro recounts, the inaugural vintage of the newly created Ca dMorissio Riserva! How is that you ask? Well this was a trial of sorts using the best vines from Monprivato in an effort to produce something special, something that would transcend the vintage. The vines Mauro selected for this bottling were... Read More

  • Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 1978

    Snoothrank:

This was superbly fresh on the nose with a touch of dried chocolate frosting adding sweetness to the dried strawberry fruit. There are layers of forest floor, seashell, tobacco, spice and herb notes here with flourishes of salad greens, dried asphalt, maduro tobacco and fresh porcini mushroom. On the palate this is bright and deep with a huge c... Read More
