Nebbiolo

Name of varietal: Nebbiolo

Common synonyms: Spanna, Picutener and Chiavennasca.

Parentage of the grape: Debatable whether it is indigenous to Piedmont or first plantings in Valtellina in Lombardy, Italy.

History of the grape: Two schools of thought exist as to the origins of Nebbiolo (which means “little fog” either for the Piedmontese autumn weather or the frosty appearance of the mature grapes). One is that it is indigenous to Piedmont, Italy. The other is that it was first planted in Valtellina, a valley within the Lombardy region, where it was then brought to Piedmont. There is some suggestion that in the 1st century, Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder gave high regard to a wine made in what is now the Barolo region, attributing to it similar characteristics associated with Nebbiolo. In the 13th century, there is reference to a wine called “nebili” from a grape that was growing near Rivoli outside of Turin. More concrete written history Read more »

Nebbiolo on Snooth

  • Barale F. Lli Barolo Castellero 1999

    Snoothrank:

Very deep and fresh on the nose with a rich, powerful core of fresh tilled earth and very aromatic fruit. This is packed in the mouth, perhaps lacking a touch of elegance but more than making up for it with dense, tightly packed fruit rich in tannin. 90pts Read More

  • Angelo Negro Barbaresco Basarin 2005

    Snoothrank:

The nose here seems to be marked with older wood tones of sandlewood, black pepper, balsamic tones and a touch of spicy dried meat. In the mouth this is very nice with sweet and sour cherry fruit, lovely balance and really nice purity. the finish is a little short as the tannins clip the final but this is a very nice and refreshing wine. 88pts Read More

  • Cascina Saria Barbaresco DOCG 1999

    Snoothrank:

Somewhat nutty on the nose with spicy woody tones and grapevine clipping notes in a perfumed and slightly fruit vein. Nice rich fruit up front, a touch simple but pure with nice mineral tones and crisp tannins buffered by slightly bitter wild cherry fruit. May not make old bones but one to drink over the next 10 years. 90pts Read More

  • Castello di Neive Barbaresco Santo Stefano 1999

    Snoothrank:

Very sweetly fruited on the nose with lots of pipe tobacco and sweet cherry fruit cut by nuanced mineral and spice tones. The palate is also full of sweet fruit with abundant tannins that are round and polished adding a very fresh feel to this youthful wine. Nicely balanced for future development. 91pts Read More

  • Piazzo Barbaresco 1999

    Snoothrank:

Smoky and herbal on the nose with a really engaging note of sharp roasted raspberry and sandy herbal notes. I really enjoy this style of bouquet. In the mouth this is balanced and juicy with ripe fruit backed up by crunchy fruit tannin and a lovely, long finish with bright, fresh fruit tones. 91pts Read More

  • Barbaresco Bric Balin Moccagatta 1999

    Snoothrank:

A bit reduced on the nose though very cedary with notes of tea and tobacco. Bright and fruity on entry then turning a bit dry and austere across the mid-palate with nice fruit but plenty of wood tannin that comes to dominate the finish. Needs time for the tannin to soften but the wine seems nice if a touch simple. 86pts Read More

  • La Spinona Barbaresco Bricco Faset 1995

    Snoothrank:

A bit dirty on the nose with lots of tree bark and quinine over the dried earth tones. Nice sweet fruit tone are presented in a rather old school, austere package with a drying edge to the tannins and a touch of dirtiness. Still this is very likable and finishes with dried fruits and sandlewood. 85pts Read More

  • Castello di Verduno Barolo 1999

    Snoothrank:

A bit stinky on the nose, smells like someone farted in my glass. It's sweet and easy in the mouth with a soft, very ripe feel and soft tannins adding a touch of shape. An easy wine 83pts Read More

  • Cascina Delle Rose Barbaresco Rio Sordo 1999

    Snoothrank:

Very mineral toned on the nose with lots of dried rose, dried meat and slightly smoky, stemmy tones adding a nice herbal essence. A little sweetly fruity on entry then still youthful and aggressive in the mouth with dark medicinal fruit tones that turns to dried raspberries and leads to a moderately long finish with emerging autumnal character. ... • Albino Rocca Nebbiolo Barbaresco Vigneto Brich Ronchi 1999

    Snoothrank:

A nose of dried flowers and tobacco is joined by a meaty, cedary, cigar box tone. the tannins here are relatively smooth with just a bit of aggressiveness showing the evolution of the wine. Still fresh with good intensity and length if a touch rustic. 87pts Read More
