Nebbiolo

Name of varietal: Nebbiolo

Common synonyms: Spanna, Picutener and Chiavennasca.

Parentage of the grape: Debatable whether it is indigenous to Piedmont or first plantings in Valtellina in Lombardy, Italy.

History of the grape: Two schools of thought exist as to the origins of Nebbiolo (which means “little fog” either for the Piedmontese autumn weather or the frosty appearance of the mature grapes). One is that it is indigenous to Piedmont, Italy. The other is that it was first planted in Valtellina, a valley within the Lombardy region, where it was then brought to Piedmont. There is some suggestion that in the 1st century, Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder gave high regard to a wine made in what is now the Barolo region, attributing to it similar characteristics associated with Nebbiolo. In the 13th century, there is reference to a wine called “nebili” from a grape that was growing near Rivoli outside of Turin. More concrete written history Read more »

Nebbiolo on Snooth

  • Cappellano Barolo Pie Franco 2004

    Snoothrank:

from botte More sudbued on the nose than the Rupestris yet sharing its feral quality with a more autumnal quality to the aromatics leaning towards tobacco and earth note before blooming into a full on sottobosco array. Elegant in the mouth but with excellent concentration of fruit, tons of fine grained tannins with sweet fruit just peaking out ... Read More

  • Barolo Cappellano Rupestris 2004

    Snoothrank:

from botte - What a huge nose, redolent of frutti di bosco with violets hint and a feral, earthy, animal driven character. Bright with acids in the mouth, packed with dense fruit and grippy, angular tannins. While very fruit driven the midpalate is full of crisp, black mineral tones. Excellent concentration and balance. Finishes with grippy tann... Read More

  • Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Torre 2010

    Snoothrank:

Floral and cherry fruit on the nose with a bit of leather in the background. Light on the palate with more cherry fruit, minerals and cedar. Finishes with a tannic bite. I don't feel this bottle is consistent with my past experiences and will leave some to try again tomorrow. Read More

  • Renwood Nebbiolo Amador County 1999

    Snoothrank:

Sadly I drank the last bottle of the 99 last night. It was shared with family and thoroughly enjoyed. We had grilled spicy chicken, fresh tomatoes, beets and basil from the garden. The cork looked new. Hardly any penetration. Color was off a bit, it seemed milky to some degree. Great legs, and smelled a bit like summer hay fields. It took about 15 ... Read More
