Name of varietal: Nebbiolo

Common synonyms: Spanna, Picutener and Chiavennasca.
Parentage of the grape: Debatable whether it is indigenous to Piedmont or first plantings in Valtellina in Lombardy, Italy.
History of the grape: Two schools of thought exist as to the origins of Nebbiolo (which means “little fog” either for the Piedmontese autumn weather or the frosty appearance of the mature grapes). One is that it is indigenous to Piedmont, Italy. The other is that it was first planted in Valtellina, a valley within the Lombardy region, where it was then brought to Piedmont. There is some suggestion that in the 1st century, Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder gave high regard to a wine made in what is now the Barolo region, attributing to it similar characteristics associated with Nebbiolo. In the 13th century, there is reference to a wine called “nebili” from a grape that was growing near Rivoli outside of Turin. More concrete written history Read more »

  • Pianpolvere Soprano Barolo 1999

Drank a bottle of this at Del Posto in NYC. This was my long awaited entry into Barolo and good god.... Give me more! On the nose were floral aromas of violets and roses to go with notes of fig and faint leather. Fills the mouth wonderfully with a long finish. Read More

  • Cascina Adelaide Barolo 2004

I can't really recommend this. I feel like this wine will be stuck in an eternal cycle of being ageworthy where it will never age well. Nothing of note, just dull and oaky. Read More

  • Gb Burlotto-Barolo Monvigliero 1995

Orange red amber in color which comes across as slightly more advanced than its age. At first opening an intense aroma of herbal tea with honey and lavender but as the hours wear the details begin to show black olives, dried flowers, tobacco and roasted chestnuts. This gorgeous Barolo glides across the palate and shows a wonderful coming of age ... Read More

  • Oddero Barolo Villero 2004

A real step up in refinement over the base Barolo with red fruits on the nose accented with clay soil tones rose petals, sweet sassafras, spicy savory tones and a liquory black fruit top note. This offers up a really layered and complex. Set of aromatics. Deceptively soft at first, the wine snaps together on the mid-palate with well-balanced, c... Read More

  • Oddero Barolo 2004

Spicy on the nose, with jammy red currant fruits and a touch of carob. Lovely fresh tannins and rich fruit give this a soft, round feel with ripe wild cherry and boysenberry fruit that is fresh and intense if a bit simple and dilute on the finish. A fine Basic Barolo 88pts Read More

  • Oddero Barolo 2001

The nose combines very fruity and intense notes of candied black raspberry fruit and cactus leaves with hints of cigarette smoke, clove and vanilla giving this a bit of a modern appearance. Big, rich and chewy in the mouth with big tannins and a dark core of confiture of black fruits. There are nuanced of espresso foam, licorice and backing spic... Read More
