Name of varietal: Nebbiolo

Common synonyms: Spanna, Picutener and Chiavennasca.
Parentage of the grape: Debatable whether it is indigenous to Piedmont or first plantings in Valtellina in Lombardy, Italy.
History of the grape: Two schools of thought exist as to the origins of Nebbiolo (which means “little fog” either for the Piedmontese autumn weather or the frosty appearance of the mature grapes). One is that it is indigenous to Piedmont, Italy. The other is that it was first planted in Valtellina, a valley within the Lombardy region, where it was then brought to Piedmont. There is some suggestion that in the 1st century, Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder gave high regard to a wine made in what is now the Barolo region, attributing to it similar characteristics associated with Nebbiolo. In the 13th century, there is reference to a wine called “nebili” from a grape that was growing near Rivoli outside of Turin. More concrete written history Read more »

Nebbiolo on Snooth

  • Marcarini Barolo la Serra 1998

Sadly wasn't too impressed by this, it's good but was expecting more especially as its not a cheap bottle. Pours a thin tawny Indian red, you can taste the heat in this one with warm cheery and redcurrant with cooked herbs. Its pretty fresh, the tannins are low but overall I was hoping for more. I've had a lot better wines than this one and the ... Read More

Forum post in the topic Hi All,

Grapes like Nebbiolo and Baga are famed for their combination of these elements, and though many producers have worked diligently over the years to soften the image, not to mention the impact on the palate, of these two giants there is only so much one c... • La Spinetta Barbaresco Vigneto Valeirano Riserva 2001

Took a little while to open up, but when it did it was a beautiful, full bodied wine with a rich deep flavor. The tannins were really not very strong, but it was still a rich wine. Great with steak. Read More

  • La Loggia Barolo 2004

Think about this, a Barolo for under $20; yes, this is not a $100 wine but for the money I would take it over a $30 California Cabernet any day. It is a bit heavy on the tannins, but let it breath for an hour at least and your will love this wine. Read More
