Muscat Ottonel

Muscat Ottonel is perhaps the least valued of the Muscat family of highly aromatic varieties. Its wine is typically faintly colored, and its aroma is notably lighter than the potent grapey essences of the superior Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains and Muscat of Alexandria. Believed to be a cross of Chasselas with a Muscat varietal grape, Muscat Ottonel is more cold-hardy than its relatives. This quality has allowed it to be widely grown in cooler areas of central and Eastern Europe, where it is best used as a late harvest white wine. There are major plantings in Austria, and in France’s Alsace area, where it has become the most grown Muscat. The variety has also established itself in Canadian vineyards in Ontario and British Columbia. And in the US, New York State’s Finger Lakes region is showing promising results in tests with a clone of Muscat Ottonel.

  • Waterbrook Red Blend Columbia Valley Mélange 2007

    Snoothrank:

Got this wine in Fresh Market in Gainesville, FL. Was in the "90+ wines for under $20" rack. Price, $14.99. The wine was good, but I have to admit I was expecting a lot more. It had some good oaky notes (which I like) but had a flat finish. Good with food, but maybe not so good on its own. Read More

  • Murfatlar Muscat Ottonel NV

    Snoothrank:

This is the finest version of Romania's Muscat Ottonel vinified by Murfatlar, branded under the Rai collection of high end whites. Very lively, a nice tipicity of Muscat Ottonel (with its characteristic floral nose with hints of ripe melon, peaches and cinnamon), a semi-sweet wine that makes a summer's fruity dessert quite lovely as a pairing. Now, here's an interesting Romanian entry in the league of fine quality white ... An assembly of Chardonnay, Muscat Ottonel and Pinot Grigio - Maiastru Blanc de Romania 2008 is a lively, floral, dry wine with aromas of elder, citrus and violets, medium bodied, with good finish and pleasant aftertaste of vanilla and grapefruit.
