Müller-Thurgau

Common synonyms: Müller, Müllerka, Müllerovo, Müller-Thurgaurebe, Riesling-Sylvaner, Rivaner, Rizanec, Rizlingszilvani, Rizvanac bijeli

Parentage of the grape: Muller-Thurgau is a cross between Riesling and Madeleine Royale.

History of the grape: This variety was developed by Dr. Hermann Muller in 1882. When naming the new grape, he added the name of the Swiss canton in which he was born to his own surname. Dr. Muller’s goal had been to create a variety with the finesse of Riesling and the reliability and early ripening of Silvaner, which is what he thought he was using. Genetic testing later proved that the second parent of Muller-Thurgau was in fact a lowly table grape called Madeleine Royale, which was the result of an unknown crossing in 1845. Decades later, after Germany’s wine industry was devastated by World War II, growers finally embraced the variety, which does indeed ripen very early and yields as much as twice what Riesling does. • Cà Lustra Colli Euganei Fior d'Arancio Passito 2008

    Snoothrank:

Tasted the 2009 vintage and was a great discovery.Sweet wine of yellow muscat grapes, clear and transparent at sight, orange-yellow colour and very consistent.Intense and very complex aromas, a mix of honey and fruits (lemon, orange, grapefruit), amazing.Neither acid, nor warm at taste but very equilibrated: the first impressions at smell are co... • Staatsweingut Freiburg Muller-Thurgau Spatlese 2003

    Snoothrank:

For such a good year, this 2003 wine from Baden is lacking fruit. This spatlese is made in a drier style but is probably 1% RS. Its 12% alc indicates an attempt to keep it on the dry side. It is more Burgundian than German. Although acceptable as a Burgundian style wine, it lacks the classic German mineral and aromatic perfume that make German w... Read More

Bottled in July 2012, to be sold in February 2013 , 3 ha between 10 and 20 years oldSuper fine nose of lemon verbena, a hint of cut grass, low floral notes, spicy flowers, laser like acids cut through a rather rich and powerfully built mouthfeel that's showing apricot, slightly exotic orchard fruit and sour apple flavors, texturally this is a ... • Dr. Beckermann Auslese Rheinhessen 2011

    Snoothrank:

This 2011 is lacking in fruit and acid. Nice golden color but the wine is sugary due to it being out of balance in sugar/acid ratio. Some floral notes in the nose and some honey but not prominent. A good value at $5. Tastes like a wine from an over-produced grosslage. Possibly Muller-Thurgau grape. My rating -- 83 Read More

  • Stoneboat Vineyards White Blend Chorus 2010

    Snoothrank:

This eclectic number is a doppelganger of the California Conundrum (Wagner Family) white and is just as good - if you like adding a good dollop of extra citrus acidity. With 6 grapes in the blend it is surprising how dominant the Pinot Gris and Viognier seem to be. But then I don't actually know the percentage break-out which I suspect is actua... Read More
