Müller-Thurgau

Common synonyms: Müller, Müllerka, Müllerovo, Müller-Thurgaurebe, Riesling-Sylvaner, Rivaner, Rizanec, Rizlingszilvani, Rizvanac bijeli

Parentage of the grape: Muller-Thurgau is a cross between Riesling and Madeleine Royale.

History of the grape: This variety was developed by Dr. Hermann Muller in 1882. When naming the new grape, he added the name of the Swiss canton in which he was born to his own surname. Dr. Muller’s goal had been to create a variety with the finesse of Riesling and the reliability and early ripening of Silvaner, which is what he thought he was using. Genetic testing later proved that the second parent of Muller-Thurgau was in fact a lowly table grape called Madeleine Royale, which was the result of an unknown crossing in 1845. Decades later, after Germany’s wine industry was devastated by World War II, growers finally embraced the variety, which does indeed ripen very early and yields as much as twice what Riesling does. Müller-Thurgau on Snooth

  • Stoneboat Piano Brut NV

    Snoothrank:

A great entry for this BC winery! Really interesting and aromatic on the nose - probably more so than I've ever seen in a sparkling wine at this price point. Has notes of sweet grass and white flowers with a fine bead. It is simple and fresh on the palate, with notes of sweet pears, honey, and vanilla. It has a unique element of freshness that's... Snoothrank:

This inexpensive 2012 auslese lived up to its price ($5). It lacks fruit, acid, ... nose. No botrytis. Probably Muller Thurgau. Why import this? This wine came from Trader Joe's. I remember when TJ's had good German wine (25- 30 yrs ago); what the heck happened? My rating 8 Read More

  • Alois Lageder Müller-Thurgau 2011

    Snoothrank:

Quite fruity on the nose with layers of peach, kiwi, chamomile and wild flower aromas and just a hint of maraschino cherry. Light weight and fresh in the mouth, this brings lightly peachy flavors to the table wrapped up in lightly nutty and floral suggestions. Theres a hint of green herb and citrus on the back end, which leads to a relatively lo... Read More
