Müller-Thurgau

Common synonyms: Müller, Müllerka, Müllerovo, Müller-Thurgaurebe, Riesling-Sylvaner, Rivaner, Rizanec, Rizlingszilvani, Rizvanac bijeli

Parentage of the grape: Muller-Thurgau is a cross between Riesling and Madeleine Royale.

History of the grape: This variety was developed by Dr. Hermann Muller in 1882. When naming the new grape, he added the name of the Swiss canton in which he was born to his own surname. Dr. Muller’s goal had been to create a variety with the finesse of Riesling and the reliability and early ripening of Silvaner, which is what he thought he was using. Genetic testing later proved that the second parent of Muller-Thurgau was in fact a lowly table grape called Madeleine Royale, which was the result of an unknown crossing in 1845. Decades later, after Germany’s wine industry was devastated by World War II, growers finally embraced the variety, which does indeed ripen very early and yields as much as twice what Riesling does. • A Willamette Valley Foch 2007, this is my topic and would like to discuss the ... mentor. Dunn Forest is one, Muller Thurgau is the other. As a beginner on this site I have no idea where to go and must admit that I am overwhelmed by the amount of alleys you could get lost into. I am so sorry for my ignorance and in no way intended to offend an... Read More

  • Pieroth Burg Layer Schlosskapelle Kabinett-Nahe Muller-Thurgau-Pradikatswein 2011

    Snoothrank:

A very robust white wine, this Muller-Thurgau can stand alone, without any food as accompaniment. It can hold its own against heavy appetizers and Mexican or Mediterranean cuisines with its full body and strong finish. The 2011 vintage has a cellaring potential of about 5 years but will probably be best in 2014-2015. Read More

  • Richard & NG,I took both the advice both of you offered and bought a Riesling and a Pinot Noir. Always one to hedge my bets. I'll let my wife sample both and choose the one that appeals to her and I will have the opportunity to try a PN that should be a good test for that grape. The German wine was a 2011 Schmitt Sohne Piersporter Michelsberg Sp... Read More

  • Terlano Muller-Thurgau Alto Adige 2010

    Snoothrank:

The nose reminds me of Riesling but the flavor profile is a bit lighter. Lively acidity and nice subtle citrus make this a wine that would go well with seafood or chicken dishes sans heavy sauce. Overall this is an extremely enjoyable quaff. Read More

  • Adolph Mueller Niersteiner Gutes Domtal Kabinett 2012

    Snoothrank:

This is the sort of wine that turns people against German wine. This wine was ... The nose is reminiscent of Muller Thurgau but is subdued. Sulfur dioxide is noticeable. Some floral notes on the palette but this is a simple wine and way over priced. My rating 78 Read More

  • Stoneboat Vineyards Chorus 2012

    Snoothrank:

This year's edition of the popular white blend "Chorus" has a rich nose of garden flowers, peach and orange marmalade; on entry there is a richer, more unctuous mouth feel with almond bitterness on the finish. Not as refreshing as the more dilute 2011 but there is more punch and some elegance. Should please most palates. 86 points. Read More
