Müller-Thurgau

Common synonyms: Müller, Müllerka, Müllerovo, Müller-Thurgaurebe, Riesling-Sylvaner, Rivaner, Rizanec, Rizlingszilvani, Rizvanac bijeli

Parentage of the grape: Muller-Thurgau is a cross between Riesling and Madeleine Royale.

History of the grape: This variety was developed by Dr. Hermann Muller in 1882. When naming the new grape, he added the name of the Swiss canton in which he was born to his own surname. Dr. Muller’s goal had been to create a variety with the finesse of Riesling and the reliability and early ripening of Silvaner, which is what he thought he was using. Genetic testing later proved that the second parent of Muller-Thurgau was in fact a lowly table grape called Madeleine Royale, which was the result of an unknown crossing in 1845. Decades later, after Germany’s wine industry was devastated by World War II, growers finally embraced the variety, which does indeed ripen very early and yields as much as twice what Riesling does. • Stoneboat Piano Brut NV

    Snoothrank:

This type of wine is difficult to score being Prosecco in style (cuvée close method) but vinified with Pinot Blanc rather than Glera grapes. Good effervescence and bubbles continue for up to 10 minutes with a powerful nose of ripe apricots. The mousse is soft on the palate with more apricot and a creme soda short finish. Interesting, juicy fruit... Read More

  • Stoneboat Piano Brut NV

    Snoothrank:

A great entry for this BC winery! Really interesting and aromatic on the nose - probably more so than I've ever seen in a sparkling wine at this price point. Has notes of sweet grass and white flowers with a fine bead. It is simple and fresh on the palate, with notes of sweet pears, honey, and vanilla. It has a unique element of freshness that's... • Dr. Beckermann Auslese Rheinhessen 2012

    Snoothrank:

This inexpensive 2012 auslese lived up to its price ($5). It lacks fruit, acid, ... nose. No botrytis. Probably Muller Thurgau. Why import this? This wine came from Trader Joe's. I remember when TJ's had good German wine (25- 30 yrs ago); what the heck happened? My rating 8 Read More

Tasted the 2009 vintage and was a great discovery.Sweet wine of yellow muscat grapes, clear and transparent at sight, orange-yellow colour and very consistent.Intense and very complex aromas, a mix of honey and fruits (lemon, orange, grapefruit), amazing.Neither acid, nor warm at taste but very equilibrated: the first impressions at smell are co... • Staatsweingut Freiburg Muller-Thurgau Spatlese 2003

    Snoothrank:

For such a good year, this 2003 wine from Baden is lacking fruit. This spatlese is made in a drier style but is probably 1% RS. Its 12% alc indicates an attempt to keep it on the dry side. It is more Burgundian than German. Although acceptable as a Burgundian style wine, it lacks the classic German mineral and aromatic perfume that make German w... Read More
