Müller-Thurgau

Common synonyms: Müller, Müllerka, Müllerovo, Müller-Thurgaurebe, Riesling-Sylvaner, Rivaner, Rizanec, Rizlingszilvani, Rizvanac bijeli

Parentage of the grape: Muller-Thurgau is a cross between Riesling and Madeleine Royale.

History of the grape: This variety was developed by Dr. Hermann Muller in 1882. When naming the new grape, he added the name of the Swiss canton in which he was born to his own surname. Dr. Muller’s goal had been to create a variety with the finesse of Riesling and the reliability and early ripening of Silvaner, which is what he thought he was using. Genetic testing later proved that the second parent of Muller-Thurgau was in fact a lowly table grape called Madeleine Royale, which was the result of an unknown crossing in 1845. Decades later, after Germany’s wine industry was devastated by World War II, growers finally embraced the variety, which does indeed ripen very early and yields as much as twice what Riesling does. Müller-Thurgau on Snooth

  • Interesting but different German white made from the Rivaner grape aka Muller-Thurgau. Very slightly "grapey" but not overly so, with some peach/apricot on the front end and a hint of minerality. Soft acidity, short finish but a decent mid week change of pace.  Cool bottle though. Read More

    Snoothrank:

Interesting but different German white made from the Rivaner grape (which according to Cellar Tracker is Muller-Thurgau). Very slightly "grapey" but not overly so, with some peach/apricot on the front end and a hint of minerality. Soft acidity, short finish but a decent mid week change of pace. Read More

  • Badger Mountain Pure White Vns

    Snoothrank:

Badgers mountains pure white wine leaves little to be desired. The initial complex fruity notes can only succumbed by the finishing notes of salted chode. It's starts with a medium body and hints of pineapple. Only to finish across the tongue with distinct anus characteristics. The final impression is that of a overweight man's towel after the ... • Vino, have you had sylvaner before?  Muller-Thurgau is a cross between it and riesling. I haven't drunk any from North America but only know those in the vicinity of Germany. Sylvaner can be refreshing if done right, but I don't get a classy, refined feel from it. Usually it's (mighty) cheap plonk over there. Come to think of it, it might be a g... Read More

  • Mostly riesling coming thru with the slight touch of RS and a decent bit of acidity.  I've had muller-thurgau before but really can't remember the taste profile.  Here's what I put in CT for a 100% muller-thurgau I had last December - The nose reminds me of Riesling but the flavor profile is a bit lighter. Lively acidity and nice subtle citrus...  Read More

  • OK, one last Zappa tune you may or may not care for - "Billy the Mountain".  It's a bit long, some versions more than others but it is true Frank story telling and some great riffs.BTW, sitting on the back deck (again) sipping on an interesting Willamette white blend of muller-thurgau, riesling, gewurztraminer and pinot gris.  Most excellent sin...
