Parentage of the grape: Muller-Thurgau is a cross between Riesling and Madeleine Royale.

History of the grape: This variety was developed by Dr. Hermann Muller in 1882. When naming the new grape, he added the name of the Swiss canton in which he was born to his own surname. Dr. Muller’s goal had been to create a variety with the finesse of Riesling and the reliability and early ripening of Silvaner, which is what he thought he was using. Genetic testing later proved that the second parent of Muller-Thurgau was in fact a lowly table grape called Madeleine Royale, which was the result of an unknown crossing in 1845. Decades later, after Germany’s wine industry was devastated by World War II, growers finally embraced the variety, which does indeed ripen very early and yields as much as twice what Riesling does. Müller-Thurgau on Snooth

  • Cantina Andriano Muller Thurgau 2008

The Müller-Thurgau is a pale yellow/green color with a pronounced aroma of peaches. It's off-dry, medium-bodied wine some acidity, and fruit tastes on the palate. While it won't knock your socks off, it is a very pleasant, mild wine that should pair well with most light summertime foods. I purchased for $12.95. Read More

  • Anne Amie White Blend Willamette Valley Cuvée a Amrita 2008

Beautiful clear to light straw in color. Rose and fruit aromas. Taste citrus flavors with lots of grapefruit, lemon and a hint of stone. Light bodied, crisp and refreshing. A sweet and sour finish. Good wine, especially for the price. Read More

  • Weingut Hajszan White Blend Gemischter Satz Weissleiten 2007

It's probably one of the most interesting wines I have ever encountered. A nuanced, biodynamic Viennese field blend of eleven varieties. Delicate complexity that slowly unfolds: white pepper, quince, dried apricot, herbs, stones, preserved lemon, soft vanilla and some strawberry juice. Also, if in Vienna, do visit the winery's restaurant. Read More

Enjoyed with our Italian meal. Earthy, a hint of smokiness, a nice roundness. More body than we are used to in our Chiantis. Liked the cherry notes. Read More

  • Round Barn Winery Vineyard Tears NV

On 4/3/2010, I visited the tasting room in Saugatuck and purchased a bottle of Vineyard Tears. With tax, the total came out to be $15.95As far as the wine in concerned, I give it the lowest rating. Essentially, it tastes terrible, like a watered down white wine. I mean, it REALLY had a weak, watered down taste. I try so hard to support Michigan ... Read More

  • Elena Walch Müller-Thurgau Vigneti Delle Dolomiti IGT 2007

The nose is fairly powerful, very floral, with peach and green apple. The grannie smith comes across stronger on the mouth, with strong acidity. A mineral edge helps fill out the body, but it could use something else, a butteriness or hint of oak would have been nice. I would give a 3.5 for aroma and 2 for mouth. Read More

Crisp linens, fresh flowers, clean air on the nose; it's a modest little cottage, freshly prepped for guests. Citrus-and-flint notes throughout, twisty acidity on the finish. Read More

  • Elena Walch Müller-Thurgau Vigneti Delle Dolomiti IGT 2007

Crisp mineral nose with a faint sulfur quality. Moderate-to-high acidity in the mouth with a light body and notes of green peppers and grass. Bizarre almost nonexistent finish. Well made but a little weak overall for me. Read More
