Parentage of the grape: native of Spain
History of the grape: Monastrell is a native of Spain, first grown in Murviedro near Valencia, and was eventually brought to Provence, France some time during the Middle Ages and spread into the Rhone where it became the dominant varietal. But the late 19th century Phylloxera epidemic was very unkind to the grape and hybrid graftings that otherwise salvaged many grape varieties proved resistant to much of the Mourvedre. The ones that survived lived in the sandy soil of the Bandol and Mediterranean coast. For this reason, most of the Rhone was replanted with other graft-friendly varietals such as Syrah and Grenache. It wasn’t until after World War II that stronger rootstocks were developed and Jacques Perrin of Chateau Beaucastel began blending the grape into Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Since then, plantings throughout the Rhone and other parts of France increased Read more »

  • Le Cigare Volant 2003

Tobacco, figs and pepper on the nose. A refined wine, with just the perfect amount of age. The fruit's still there - black cherry, blackcurrant, raisins - but there are also some nice secondary aromas - leather. Its very fruity, on the verge of being too much, so I bet its improved over the last few years as the fruit had time to die down. Nice ... Read More

  • Bodegas Juan Gil Monastrell Jumilla 2006

Inky purple in the glass. Black cherry, smoke, licorice, tobacco, and more. Medium bodied, but then come the tannins: firm, full and well integrated. Yum. Consistently a great wine at an even better price. Read More

  • Le Cigare Volant 2004

Plum and frosting on this (still slightly hot) savory nose. Palate is juicy, rich, a bit spicy, with leather, a touch of black olive, rich deep black fruits and even a hint of bell pepper on the finish. Excellent wine. Read More

  • Le Cigare Volant 2004

Wow this is very fragrant with lovely notes of dried mountain flowers, herbs de provence, roasted meat, black earth and dried strawberries with hints of black pepper and gum. Full of juicy, nervous acidity and ripe tannins that keep this refreshing. There is a fine interplay between the fruit, stemmy forest floor, and savory elements in the mout... Read More

  • Castano Solanera Monastrell Cabernet Yecla 2005

Intensely flavorful blend (65% Monastrell, 20% Cab, 15% Tintorera). Spicy, blackberry, and a little smoky. (I swear I taste oysters too, but I could be hallucinating.) Read More
