Mourvèdre

Common synonyms: Monastrell, Motaro, Alcayata (Spain), Damas Noir, Negria, Esparte, Trinchiera

Parentage of the grape: native of Spain

History of the grape: Monastrell is a native of Spain, first grown in Murviedro near Valencia, and was eventually brought to Provence, France some time during the Middle Ages and spread into the Rhone where it became the dominant varietal. But the late 19th century Phylloxera epidemic was very unkind to the grape and hybrid graftings that otherwise salvaged many grape varieties proved resistant to much of the Mourvedre. The ones that survived lived in the sandy soil of the Bandol and Mediterranean coast. For this reason, most of the Rhone was replanted with other graft-friendly varietals such as Syrah and Grenache. It wasn’t until after World War II that stronger rootstocks were developed and Jacques Perrin of Chateau Beaucastel began blending the grape into Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Since then, plantings throughout the Rhone and other parts of France increased Read more »

  • Next week Trader Joe's will open a location just minutes from my home, I know they have all kinds of great specialty foods, and I've been told you can get some great inexpensive wine buys to stock up on. Any recommendations for their reds that are suitable for everyday enjoyment? I prefer Zins, Cabs and Pinot Noir. ~ thank you ~ Read More

  • Le Cigare Volant 2004

    Snoothrank:

Markedly different from the 2003. This is the wine to go for if you want a more meaty, fruity wine. The '03 is for structure and finesse.[compared to the '03]. Richer, more mouthfeel, much more youthful tannins. Plums dominate, but the tannins really build over time. A powerful wine, although the finish is smooth. Read More

  • Le Cigare Volant 2003

    Snoothrank:

Tobacco, figs and pepper on the nose. A refined wine, with just the perfect amount of age. The fruit's still there - black cherry, blackcurrant, raisins - but there are also some nice secondary aromas - leather. Its very fruity, on the verge of being too much, so I bet its improved over the last few years as the fruit had time to die down. Nice ... Read More

    Snoothrank:

Inky purple in the glass. Black cherry, smoke, licorice, tobacco, and more. Medium bodied, but then come the tannins: firm, full and well integrated. Yum. Consistently a great wine at an even better price. Read More

  • Le Cigare Volant 2004

    Snoothrank:

If Snooth opted for the relationship status, I would say that It's Complicated with Bonny Doon Le Cigare Volant right now. It's rich and expressive, lots of dark chocolate and espresso flavors, wood, strong tannins, earth, cranberries, cherries, Marlboro 27's. Read More
