Parentage of the grape: native of Spain
History of the grape: Monastrell is a native of Spain, first grown in Murviedro near Valencia, and was eventually brought to Provence, France some time during the Middle Ages and spread into the Rhone where it became the dominant varietal. But the late 19th century Phylloxera epidemic was very unkind to the grape and hybrid graftings that otherwise salvaged many grape varieties proved resistant to much of the Mourvedre. The ones that survived lived in the sandy soil of the Bandol and Mediterranean coast. For this reason, most of the Rhone was replanted with other graft-friendly varietals such as Syrah and Grenache. It wasn’t until after World War II that stronger rootstocks were developed and Jacques Perrin of Chateau Beaucastel began blending the grape into Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Since then, plantings throughout the Rhone and other parts of France increased Read more »

  • Panarroz Mourvedre Blend Jumilla Panarroz 2006

Fig and Red Licorice on the nose, ruby red in the glass. Hint of the red fruit at the beginning and then dry, leather and soft tobacco on the back end. Slightly throat numbing with a definate taste of fig on the aftertaste. Read More

  • Chateau Ste. Michelle Red Blend Columbia Valley Orphelin Limited Release 2005

This is a well executed grape stock sourced, quality Rhone style blend, ala ... one more: 56% Syrah, yo 15% Mourvedre, silky 10% Cinsault, 8% Grenache, 4% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Touriga, and exclamation pts. 1% Pinot Noir and 1% Viognier. Yikes ~craft away I say! It was hard enough to type all that? So for the reasonable price... Read More

  • Bogle Vineyards Red Blend California Phantom 2006

Full-bodied with vibrant fruit of black raspberry, black cherry and blueberry that give way to vanilla and oak on the finish. Like most zin, it's on the high end of the ABV scale, but fruit and acidity came through and was not overwhelmed by the tannins or heat of alcohol. Flavors seemed to open up the longer it was in the glass. Read More

  • Michael-David Vineyards Incognito 2005

This Rhône-style blend is bravely composed of 9 different varietals including: Mourvedre, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Cinsault, Carignane, Tannat, Malbec, Cabernet Franc, and Grenache. The outcome is successfully, by design, an enigmatic Rhône Valley tribute including, literally, every typical Rhône varietal. Surprisingly, I found characteristics and... Read More

  • I only started drinking wine about a month ago. I have never been a drinker of any kind, but having had wine at a few parties and wedding receptions recently, I decided that I like the stuff. I joined Snooth to get some good recommendations on new wines. I seem to like red wine the most. Of what I have tried I like Petite Sirah, Shiraz, Cabe... Read More

  • Finca Luzón Jumilla Clos Lupo Monastrell Joven 2006

Dark berry fruit, licorice, mushrooms, and leather on first whiff. Baked cherries and overripe dark fruit can overwhelm at first sip but opens up to spice and licorice notes through the finish. Not without imperfections, but a good value. Read More
