The Occitanian word “merlot” translates to “young blackbird.” An accurate description for this popular, early-budding red wine grape, which also happens to be a close cousin to Cabernet Sauvignon. Used for both blending and as a varietal, this grape originates from France’s Bordeaux region, and is a primary grape in Bordeaux wine.

Merlot on Snooth

  • Rodney Strong Merlot Sonoma County 2011

A touch herbal on the nose with cherry and raspberry notes. Sharp and fresh on the attack, with ripe red cherry and raspberry notes towards the midpalate and a candied finish touched by clay.87 pts Read More

  • Chateau Rahoul 2012

This is a delicious Merlot-based Graves that is ready right now; graphite and cherry greet the nose, and the entry is dominated by Merlot-typical cherry and some residual tannin/lignin. Finish is smooth and fruity - though not nearly so dense as the 2010 or 2009 (as expected). Good value. A bit underrated, methinks. 88 points. Read More

  • Chateau Paillet-Quancard 2010

Ready to roar now, this 2010 Cadillac red is full of tobacco, red licorice whip, and raspberry on the nose. There is a lot of ripe fruit on entry with a touch of evanescent tannin; some evidence of Cabernet in a hint of cassis. Smooth and at its peak now for most enjoyable drinking. Excellent value. Here in Coquitlam BC a palette of 35 cases... Read More

  • A bunch of drinks poured for ourselves and another couple last Friday...Trying ... ... I'll donate some Cab/Merlot to round it out. They are going with 1 white as of now, the 2014 Dog Point. They don't like Chardonnay, which was confirmed when I blind tasted them the 2012 PYCM Bourgogne Blanc. It showed well, but it had a little of the oak/butt... Read More

  • Chateau Labadie Cru Bourgeois Medoc 2010

This nicely behaved Medoc emits some nice blackberry (cassis), black cherry and some cedar bark on the nose, and the colour is deepest red - almost sanguine. Some vanilla notes with a hint of tannin as the wine finishes quite smoothly with slightly wood-laden blackberry. You can keep for several years, but drinking fine now. Decent value. 88 p... • When I got cancer my treatment made any alcholol taste like metal. So, for eighteen years I stopped drinking and enjoying a drink with family & friends. Then I started experimenting with different wines. Finally found a Merlo with a smoothness I enjoyed. But, with a price of $12. When we went to Trader Joes and they suggested we try Chas. ...
