The Occitanian word “merlot” translates to “young blackbird.” An accurate description for this popular, early-budding red wine grape, which also happens to be a close cousin to Cabernet Sauvignon. Used for both blending and as a varietal, this grape originates from France’s Bordeaux region, and is a primary grape in Bordeaux wine.

Two thirds of the world’s total planted Merlot grapes are grown in France. After that, it is Italy’s 5th most planted grape. Merlot surged to popularity in the United States in the 1990s.

Contrary to its Vitis Vinifera sibling, Pinot Noir, Merlot grows in loose bunches of berries. It’s a fragile grape, and its early ripening qualities make it vulnerable to risks such as frost and rotting. That being said, Merlot wines tend to be Read more »

Merlot on Snooth

  • Domaine Du Tariquet Rose De Pressee Gascogne 2014

    Snoothrank:

Refreshing and fun to drink. Raspberry, strawberry with bright acidity. The temps have been in the high 80's and finally 90 for several days so I served this with watermelon and it worked - wonderfully. Great little quaffer - drink now - Paul 88 points Read More

  • RCKR-Don't go too out of your way for the Tapena, it's a solid daily ... ... and price. If you like a Merlot that tastes closer to a cab you need to try to find a bottle. It was a 2012 and it showed excellent.&nbs Read More

  • Duckhorn Decoy 2012

    Snoothrank:

Another good but nothing to write about wine. the entry Duckhorn brand isn't about substance, that i've experienced, it's more about selling to the novice drinker at an exaggerated price point. this is a very easy going cabbie thst requires NO thought or or taste buds. What saves it is the lingering fruit on a beam of acidity that grows. Paul 84... Read More

  • MJET- I am looking for the Tapena 2012.  Hopefully to get some some ... ... ... me - I really enjoy merlot - good ones.  So I guess is their quality consistent? what was this bottling like at the 8-9 year mark?  Thanks - PaulRICHARD - Isn't it a lovely thing to look at the sky and see red wine?  Sorta like the harvest moon.  Paul             ... • Craggy Range "Te Kahu" Bordeaux Blend Gimblett Gravels 2009

    Snoothrank:

Boy is this good. Bourdeaux all the way. You'll want meat with this. Blackberries, plum, vanilla, earthy/herbal notes and oak round out the nose. Chewy tannins the rachet up not only the fruit, but the intensity of the mouthfeel in general. The taste is well defined with pleasing fruit with additional cinnamon and mocha to round out the palate. ... Read More

  • Bodegas Alto Almanzora Red Blend Almeria Este 2008

    Snoothrank:

Decent nose to this garnet colored wine. Chocolate, dark cherry and red berry fruits with spice notes. The round gripping tannins pull the fruit and spice to a juicy acidic aftertaste dominated by the well framed fruit. The aftertaste is medium long just like the body. The mid palate is best, picking up a sweetness to the dark cherry backdrop. I... Read More

  • Old Soul Zinfandel Old Vine 2012

    Snoothrank:

A real surprise. I bought several of these a few years ago just for nights of bbq, several friends over and what not. This remained buried in the cellar until last night. Good idea - glad I didn't plan it that way. Large blackberry and briary along with red plum and dirt really explode out of the glass. A leggy, smooth flowing juice flows a leav... Read More

  • Markham Merlot Napa Valley 2010

    Snoothrank:

I stored this bottle just to see how it would hang. Nothing special, it's just that I like Markham and this bottling received less positive hype than most. A brooding dark juice with excellent viscosity, blackberry and dark cherry, chocolate and spice. Married completely now this finishes balanced and seamless. Paul 90 points Read More

  • Craggy Range Te Kahu Gimblett Gravels Vineyard 2011

    Snoothrank:

This has an odd presence for a bordeaux blend. Actually it makes me think of some pre-1997 Iyalian wines. Although there is accompanying fruit, it's more earth, spice, red cedar, anise and snappy acidity and tannins. It's a little different but it is good. drink now - Paul 88 points Read More

  • Tua Rita Rosso Dei Notri Toscana 2013

    Snoothrank:

Bright red berry fruits highlight this IGT blend. This plenty of anise, red cedar, a hint of tobacco with a zest note and medium tannins marry up to good acidity flowing to a good lengthy aftertaste. It's ready - drink now. Paul 90 points Read More

Then I started experimenting with different wines. Finally found a Merlo with a smoothness I enjoyed. But, with a price of $12. When we went to Trader Joes and they suggested we try Chas. ...
