The Occitanian word “merlot” translates to “young blackbird.” An accurate description for this popular, early-budding red wine grape, which also happens to be a close cousin to Cabernet Sauvignon. Used for both blending and as a varietal, this grape originates from France’s Bordeaux region, and is a primary grape in Bordeaux wine.

Two thirds of the world’s total planted Merlot grapes are grown in France. After that, it is Italy’s 5th most planted grape. Merlot surged to popularity in the United States in the 1990s.

Merlot on Snooth

  • Chateau Fontbernard Saint-Emilion 2010

    Snoothrank:

Really, really good. In fact this could stand a couple of more years in the cellar. Black berry fruit, mocha, vanilla, chewy tannins that turn into a sweetish daek cherry on the finish and vibrant acidity make this a classic effort. Drink or hold - 90 points - Paul Read More

  • Columbia Crest H3 Merlot 2013

    Snoothrank:

A big surprise. This needed a little lay down time and was well rewarded. Lush and fruity with rounded tannins and good acidity. A wonderful mouthfeel this is a perfect daily drinker - 88 points - drink now - Paul Read More

  • Chateau Julien Merlot 2002

    Snoothrank:

It's 15 years old now, the oldest wine I ever had till today... and I'm not impressed. The flavor is good, in general - it's round, ripe red fruits with prunes and leather. It has nice short aftertaste and significant amount of sediment, at least according to my experience... don't shake it=) but I could get all that with younger wines and I don... Read More

  • D - it's a whole other topic how those wines have evolved, changed, etc. I ... pop grapes like Cab Sauv, Merlot, etc. But maybe the places in Chile where those were grown might have been better for other grapes?I've often preferred the whites, based on what was available in the US. But the reds are getting better every year as they're matching... Read More

  • OK, my OCD is kicking in.Al, did the Somm say that it contained ... Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, Petit Verdot and the rarer St. Macaire, Gros Verdot and Carmenère. If the blend includes any other grape variety, it is, by definition, not a Meritage. Also, to qualify as a Meritage, no single grape variety can make up more than 90% of the blend... Read More

  • This is a bottle that got dropped off a couple of days before the Merlot party - your guess is as good as mine as to why.  Had it with buttered popcorn while the Badgers plat another piss poor game and lost to Michigan. It actually wasn't bad, better than the Badgers were for sure.  The thing about buttered popcorn is that it can make bad chard d... • I like the idea of a Merlot party.  I enjoy Duckhorn's Merlot the most, as they are known for this varietal.  I was surprised to hear that a Columbia Crest wine was a good one.  Were you expecting a pour showing for the H3 2013 Merlot?  Read More

  • SAVED California 2013

    Snoothrank:

Savory mineral notes on the nose with a fiery heat and a rich cream. On the palate there's a lot more fruit, with red currant, cherry and cranberry flavors, a nice spice and a bit of earthiness, some light menthol and a dark chocolate finish. Read More

Then I started experimenting with different wines. Finally found a Merlo with a smoothness I enjoyed. But, with a price of $12. When we went to Trader Joes and they suggested we try Chas. ...
