The Occitanian word “merlot” translates to “young blackbird.” An accurate description for this popular, early-budding red wine grape, which also happens to be a close cousin to Cabernet Sauvignon. Used for both blending and as a varietal, this grape originates from France’s Bordeaux region, and is a primary grape in Bordeaux wine.

Two thirds of the world’s total planted Merlot grapes are grown in France. After that, it is Italy’s 5th most planted grape. Merlot surged to popularity in the United States in the 1990s.

Contrary to its Vitis Vinifera sibling, Pinot Noir, Merlot grows in loose bunches of berries. It’s a fragile grape, and its early ripening qualities make it vulnerable to risks such as frost and rotting. That being said, Merlot wines tend to be Read more »

Merlot on Snooth

  • Ginestet Margaux 2004

    Snoothrank:

I bought this bottle of wine a while ago from a wine merchant in Sussex and I ... it is obviously a blend of merlot and one or both of the cabernets. I started the bottle last night with my supper of roast pork and I did enjoy it. There is plenty of blackcurrant and plum style fruit there and the tannins are soft but hold things together nicel... • Chateau Cantelys Pessac Leognan 2009

    Snoothrank:

This wine takes some air to open up. Moderate color, not inky, soft tannin, some cedar in the nose with plum, spice, black currant and floral notes. Medium body with a fairly long finish. An enjoyable wine but at this price point, I could beat it with a Washington state red blend or cab. My rating-- 89. Read More

  • That wine is, probably, not worth much.  An on-line search yielded ... ... Bay Proprietor's Reserve Merlot in a blind tasting in 1996.  It was estimated that the retail price of that wine was $10-15.  It appears that in 2008, the name Emerald Bay was taken by the Chateau Julien winery of Carmel, CA, and is used for a line of relatively inexpen... • Chateau Lilian Ladouys 2010

    Snoothrank:

This wine was given some great scores by the press although it didn't show any quality upon my tasting. Only slightly tannic and deeply colored, though it lacked fruit. Nice cedar nose. Overpriced. My rating 83. Read More
