The Occitanian word “merlot” translates to “young blackbird.” An accurate description for this popular, early-budding red wine grape, which also happens to be a close cousin to Cabernet Sauvignon. Used for both blending and as a varietal, this grape originates from France’s Bordeaux region, and is a primary grape in Bordeaux wine.

Two thirds of the world’s total planted Merlot grapes are grown in France. After that, it is Italy’s 5th most planted grape. Merlot surged to popularity in the United States in the 1990s.

Not bad but not great Sonoma Valley red blend by Gun Bun. On the nose there's a bit of a sharp blueberry note. The palate is a thin mix of blueberry, blackberry and some black cherry. The acidity is medium low and the finish is somewhat short. Read More

    Snoothrank:

A Lot 18 buy. Big, beautiful, ripe, and luscious. Dark and inky. Opens with ripe plum and cherry preserves, then chocolate and fudge and lavender and vanilla, wet cedar and oak. Big mouthful, well balanced tannins and acidity with a finish that goes on and on. Did not decant, but got better and better and more subtle in the glass. Ridiculously... Read More

  • Gainey Vineyard Limited Selection Merlot 2011

    Snoothrank:

Some fruit and some alcohol on the nose. Lots of cherry on the tip of the tongue. Almost, syrupy, but not quite. Some acid tartness towards the back along with some slightly bitter olive hits. Very little tannin sturdiness. An easy wine to drink, but, really, not much other satisfaction. Read More

  • Stupid painted bottles are impossible to photograph well We visited Gainey ... surprised that I liked this Merlot enough to buy it.  Tasting it now, I have to wonder, "What was I thinking?"  Big cherry hit on the tip of the tongue.  Some acid following it.  Sort of a bitter olive thing way in the back of the throat.  Little or no tannin structu...
