Two thirds of the world’s total planted Merlot grapes are grown in France. After that, it is Italy’s 5th most planted grape. Merlot surged to popularity in the United States in the 1990s.

Contrary to its Vitis Vinifera sibling, Pinot Noir, Merlot grows in loose bunches of berries. It’s a fragile grape, and its early ripening qualities make it vulnerable to risks such as frost and rotting. That being said, Merlot wines tend to be Read more »

  • I assume you know, Al, that Stags' Leap Winery is not the same as ... with ... with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines and the vineyard was renamed to "Stag's Leap Vineyard" or "S.L.V".[1][3][4]The first vintage produced from the new vineyard was in 1972 and was produced in a rented facility.[2] Winiarski was in charge of making the wine, wit... • Noble Hill Estate Blend Simonsberg-Paarl 2012

    Snoothrank:

Light red fruit on the nose. Showing some cooked yet fresh red fruit, raspberry and red currant. Quite delicate in the mouth but does supply some supple texture towards the finish which is zesty and chewy, with some licorice and cherry notes bubbling up. Read More

  • Chateau Bernadotte 2009

    Snoothrank:

This 2009 Bernadotte is very good indeed; it is perfectly representative of the upper Medoc with some fir shank (perhaps white spruce), cherry, and organic soil on the nose. The entry gives a medium density with distinctive cherry and cedar mid-palate. Nice warm, slightly chewy, medium finish. Worthy. 89 points. Read More
