Read moreEdI have enjoyed your postings, lately, but I have to question your blind ... a "a cheap California merlot, a Spanish Reserva rioja, and a Bell Wine Cellars Clone 6 cab."  I do not participate in blind tastings very often, but when I do, we are generally tasting similar wines.  What is the purpose in blind tasting such different styles and types of wines?On the other hand, your conclusions seem valid and I really don't think I have any argument, there. My personal experience is that my opinion (if I can use that word instead of "rating") of a wine changes--fairly rapidly.  Not suprising since, although I have been enjoying wine for many years, I am not a professional and, frankly, neither my sense of smell nor my sense of taste are as sharp as most people's.  I don't "taste" wines so much as I drink them.  "Tasting," like GDP and other professionals do is work, and I do not care to sign up for that.  When we join friends for a "blind tasting," what we are really doing is drinking 5-6 wines fro  m 5-6 glasses with a meal.  Invariably, a wine that shines with the first course fades with a subsequent course, and a new player rises to the occassion.  I know that what we are doing is not as serious as some, but it is (1) a lot of fun and (2) very instructive in its own way    (hide)

Yet would my... Read moreI think that some of us are more likely to be influenced by the label. I know ... match up a cheap California merlot, a Spanish Reserva rioja, and a Bell Wine Cellars Clone 6 cab, I surely would be able to select the Bell since it's far and away the superior wine. Yet would my rating be as accurate as, say, a test of 2007 small production cabs?  In the latter case, the comparison allows us to measure like type.  But what if I mixed regions (Napa and Sonoma)? I remain suspicious of the ratings after I have discovered that so many 90 point wines just were not that great.  I wonder if an experience taster who can easily pick out wines from his favorite producers will not act with bias toward those producers. Just some thoughts...    (hide)

Then if you're like me just unload most of the Turley, while keeping a few for curiosity sake and gifting. Drink all the rest, smacking your lips with satisfaction all the while, in several cases wagging your head in awe. And yes, Jon, these you can buy single bottles of.  ;-) Wonder how long these'll stay All of those are usually 13-15%, none that I've had tend to be sweet and jammy, and you don't really get an alcoholic burn, but you don't always get a lot of pleasure either! If you like those, fine, but if you don't try to pick up something from Australia's Barossa Valley - you might find it a lot more enjoyable as the stereotype of those wines for better or worse is "fruity".Price range is all over the map - Moscato and Brachetto tend to be cheap - like $10 US, most of the other wines a few dollars more and some ranging quite high. Not that they're worth the extra money, but price is also a way to signify that they think the wine is "important".Anyhow, again, you need not fall in love with wine ever.  But if you object to alcohol, know that sometimes it's less apparent than others, and now you have some guidelines to consider.Good luck with your searches    (hide)
