The Occitanian word “merlot” translates to “young blackbird.” An accurate description for this popular, early-budding red wine grape, which also happens to be a close cousin to Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot on Snooth

  • Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley 2001

    Snoothrank:

Very rich dark color in the glass. Mostly, an earthy, woody nose--slight berry fruit. Fruit shows on the tongue. Lots of cabernet cassis flavor on the tip of the tongue, then a hint of clove. Quite velvety as it travels over the tongue. As it gets to the side edges of the tongue I get the tannin/acid hit. Not the biggest cab you'll ever dr... Read More

  • Groth Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville 2008

    Snoothrank:

Very well balanced and restrained cab from Oakville. Really nice dark fruits, dried plum, a touch of leather, fine grained tannins and medium acidity. This has a nice long finish that paints the back of the tongue with dark crushed cherries. Read More

  • So you want to celebrate Earth Day do you? And what better way than with an ... an ... 25% Ciliegiolo, 25% Merlot. Dark on the nose and slightly oaky with aromas of maduro tobacco, licorice and carob that drift up with spicy nuance to frame a tight core of black fruit and fresh leather. An initial rush of candied herbs flows across the palate... Read More

  • Chateau le Boscq 2008

    Snoothrank:

For 2008, Chateau le Boscq has produced a patent-like St-Estephe with the usual tobacco, cassis and cedar notes on the nostrils with a relatively tame entry of light tannins, blackcurrant and cigar. Good medium finish Drink now. 88 points. Read More

  • Chateau Tire Pe "Diem" 2012

    Snoothrank:

Soft and subtle on the nose, at first this shows off a quite fruity side with sweet notes of grapes and currants but air brings out some sweet nutty oak tones along with hints of tomato leaf, sun dried tomatoes, little flecks of black olive and a touch of sassafras. Soft and almost elegant on entry, this shows off brilliantly pure and fresh frui... Read More

  • James Cole on the Silverado trail is a hidden gem.  They make a Malbec and ... and an ice wine made from Merlot.  You won't find many wineries in Napa that do either one.  A tip to keep to your budget, (and extend your day) is to share tastings with a friend.  You'll find that when you start sipping at 10am you are almost ready to call it a day... • Welcome to the Forum WW.  Of the wineries that you listed as tentative ... ...  I even like their Merlot.  However, if you like "Butter Bomb" Chardonnay's (like I have been told are offered by Rombauer), you probably won't care for the Keenan Chardonnay.  Keenan's shows a bit of fruit and very noticeable (and, to me, agreeable) acid.  I'm not...
