Mencia

Common synonyms: Cabernet, Jaen (Portugal), Loureiro tinto, Médoc, Mencía pajaral, Mencía pequeña, Negra, Negro

Parentage of the grape: As the list of synonyms indicates, it was thought for a long time that Mencia was related to Cabernet Franc. However, it was proven in 2003 that this is not the case.

Characteristics of the grape: red and dark berry fruit, occasional vegetal character, can be savory, with good acidity and tannin.

Regions where the grape currently is important: Ribeira Sacra, Bierzo, and Valdeorras

  • Los Bayos Roble Bierzo Mencia Roble 8 Meses 2006

    Snoothrank:

Many better wines out there at this price point. This is a dry red wine that had a surprising amount of sediment at the bottom (so may be worth decanting). Definitely allow the wine to breathe and perhaps cellar for a few years - not super drinkable right now. Read More

  • El Pecado 2005

    Snoothrank:

Cult wine from Spain. 100% Mencia which produces a light, bright red fruit with floral notes. Compares favorably with the best wines of Priorat. The 2005 would benefit from more time in the bottle before drinking. Read More

Pleasant, very drinkable but lacking in complexity and maturity. Medium body, medium balance between acidity and sweetness. Perhaps this wine will improve with a few years the cellar. Read More
