Characteristics of the grape: red and dark berry fruit, occasional vegetal character, can be savory, with good acidity and tannin.

Regions where the grape currently is important: Ribeira Sacra, Bierzo, and Valdeorras

Type or types of wines the grape produces: The Mencias of Ribeira Sacra are lighter, brighter, fresher, and often more mineral-driven. The grape thrives on the steep Read more »

Mencia on Snooth

  • Mencia was a new grape for me (I'd actually not really heard of it) and it pushes my grape total past 120 finally...I thought it was rather like Blaufrankish (pure, mineral, steely, crisp even)- is that common, or just this region, or just this wine? Read More

  • Pago de Valdoneje Mencia 2007

Bright acidic nose. This wine is very lean and pure. Crisp even. There's some cherry and redcurrant tones and a lot of minerality - reminded me of a Blaufrankish (although the sommellier scoffed at that) Read More

  • Telmo Rodriguez Gabo Do Xil Valdeorras Mencia 2006

A producer that all should be familiar with; seldom offering a disappointing wine. This 100% Mencia has an excellent nose, balance and a delicacy and poise that we pinpointed to violets. Ripe strawberries adds to the complexity of flavour. Read More

  • Los Bayos Roble Bierzo Mencia Roble 8 Meses 2006

Many better wines out there at this price point. This is a dry red wine that had a surprising amount of sediment at the bottom (so may be worth decanting). Definitely allow the wine to breathe and perhaps cellar for a few years - not super drinkable right now. Read More
