Characteristics of the grape: red and dark berry fruit, occasional vegetal character, can be savory, with good acidity and tannin.

Regions where the grape currently is important: Ribeira Sacra, Bierzo, and Valdeorras

  • Losada Bierzo 2009

The cool climate red here is full of blueberry and cherry on the nose notwithstanding comparisons with Pinot Noir; on entry the mouth feel is soft, satin and well-balanced with medium tannin. Very elegant with a solid medium finish, this wine is a good bargain. 89 points. Read More

  • Casar de Burbia Mencia 2010

Flavorful, tart, and fruit-forward, with some notable tannins as well. I could taste cranberry and a little sea salt. Nothing is out of place here. It would stand up to a hearty meal, but it is good on its own too. Read More
