Mencia

Common synonyms: Cabernet, Jaen (Portugal), Loureiro tinto, Médoc, Mencía pajaral, Mencía pequeña, Negra, Negro

Parentage of the grape: As the list of synonyms indicates, it was thought for a long time that Mencia was related to Cabernet Franc. However, it was proven in 2003 that this is not the case.

Characteristics of the grape: red and dark berry fruit, occasional vegetal character, can be savory, with good acidity and tannin.

Regions where the grape currently is important: Ribeira Sacra, Bierzo, and Valdeorras

Type or types of wines the grape produces: The Mencias of Ribeira Sacra are lighter, brighter, fresher, and often more mineral-driven. The grape thrives on the steep Read more »

Mencia on Snooth

  • Casar de Burbia Mencia 2010

    Snoothrank:

Flavorful, tart, and fruit-forward, with some notable tannins as well. I could taste cranberry and a little sea salt. Nothing is out of place here. It would stand up to a hearty meal, but it is good on its own too. Read More

  • We continue our ongoing interview series with the friends of Snooth today by ... a grape I had not yet tried, Mencia. I've reviewed something like 170 different varieties at The Reverse Wine Snob and I've only scratched the surface of what's out there and that's awesome. White: 2012 puklavec & friends Sauvignon Blanc & Pinot Grigio This one is... • Armas de Guerra Rosado Bierzo Mencia Rose Spain 2013

    Snoothrank:

Fruity on the nose and in fact peachy with subtle licorice spice and tea notes emerging with air along with a slightly tarry mineral base note. A little sweet on the palate, but with plenty of acidity to keep this fresh and bright. Not terribly fruit, though the subtle raspberry flavors are attractive and gain intensity in the mouth along with a... Read More

  • Bodegas Peique Mencía Bierzo Tinto 2009

    Snoothrank:

The color on this wine is a deep ruby, somewhat darker than I expected. At first blush, the wine had a distinct nose of "Frankenberry" but as I let it open up a bit, the fruit subsided and a lovely combination of leather, spice, tobacco and espresso made themselves known. The taste was rather surprising, as I was expecting a rush of fruit at t... Read More

  • Losada Vinos de Finca Bierzo El Pajaro Rojo Mencia 2011

    Snoothrank:

First impression is that this is fairly tannic with loads of dark fruit, plum, blackberry and leather. Decent acidity and a medium finish. Read More

  • I'm a fairly new "snoother" if that term is correct and just beginning to learn more about wine. I've been reading and researching wines for about a year and a half now, but recently have been trying a variety of wine (I turned 21 last March.) I drink exclusively red wines and my favorite come from California, particularly Napa, and Spain. I lov... Read More
