Characteristics of the grape: red and dark berry fruit, occasional vegetal character, can be savory, with good acidity and tannin.

Regions where the grape currently is important: Ribeira Sacra, Bierzo, and Valdeorras

Type or types of wines the grape produces: The Mencias of Ribeira Sacra are lighter, brighter, fresher, and often more mineral-driven. The grape thrives on the steep Read more »

  • Barbera d'Asti DOC la Luna E I Falò 2006

Mencia eh? First time trying this grape and it is worth trying again. Light plum and licorice with a hint of tobacco and earth. Nicely balanced with a pleasant mouth feel and an okay finish. Bit tannic and rusty but good for the $13 (on sale from $17.99 at BC liquor stores). Read More

  • Descendientes de J. Palacios Villa de Corullón 2007

Fragrant aromas of cola, blue and black fruit (black cherries, blueberries, plums), oak, and vanilla. Blueberry and plum flavors join harmoniously with notes of earth, oak, and violets on the finish. Well-structured and balanced wine with nice acidity that paired well with steak. Read More

The wine was a nice, medium yellow and very aromatic. After swirling the wine, I only had to put my nose near the glass to pick up the nice lime and green apple aromas. On a second check, I also found ripe melon and stone fruits. In the mouth, the Martin Codax tasted of lime, blossoms, and peach, mixed with the slightest bit of honey. The wi... Read More
