Melon

(Melon de Bourgogne, Muscadet, Weisserburgunder)

In the 1970s and 1980s, in a period when varietal accuracy on wine labels was often a secondary thought much of what was thought to be Pinot Blanc in California were actually plantings of Melon. Today, this grape is a minor variety in the Golden State, with small plantings in the cooler areas of the North and Central Coast regions. In such cool, coastal conditions, Melon can make balanced table wines with good flavor. Not surprising, since this old Burgundian variety, once widely grown in that area,is most associated with an even cooler coastal region. In France, Melon is mainly used to make white wines known as Muscadet from the Loire Valley's extreme western edge, known as the Nantes, which borders the Atlantic ocean. Here it makes light acidic white wines, with tart acidity, citric fruit character that often possess a salty character. The best of these come from the Muscadet de Sevre et Maine AOC, where many of the wines are aged sur lie to take on extra Read more »

Melon on Snooth

  • Michel Gassier Sauvignon Blanc les Piliers 2013

    Snoothrank:

Pretty decent mid-week Sauv Blanc. Fresh and crisp with nice notes of white peach, melon and not too much grapefruit. There's a medium amount of acidity and a decent length finish. Nothing fancy but nice QPR. Read More

  • Vitiano Bianco Verdicchio Vermentino Umbria IGT 2013

    Snoothrank:

Lemon and honeydew melon aromas. Honeyed palate with toasted almonds, lemon, green bell pepper, cut grass and stone fruits like pear and green apple. Theres good balance between the alcohol and acidity, and its the green note that makes this wine more interesting than a lot of others. Read More

  • Ceretto Blange Langhe Arneis 2013

    Snoothrank:

Honeydew melon, cantaloupe and lemon aromas. In the mouth its oily but fresh, showing lemon, melon and herbal notes of lemongrass and chamomile tea. Theres a bit of dissolved CO2 here, lending a fresh zestiness to the palate, which coupled with the acidity makes this a great food wine, especially with creamy foods that would need a counterbalance. • Peju Sauvignon Blanc Napa Valley 2014

    Snoothrank:

Lemon, honeydew melon and sunflower aromas with a touch of cut grass. Classic Napa Sauvignon Blanc character in the mouth - warm and clean, and driven by citrus fruits - lemon and lime, with a good dose of peach and apricot with gruyere cheese. The finish is creamy and long with hints of lemon ice or lemon creme. Read More

  • Patz & Hall Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard 2012

    Snoothrank:

Lots of apple and melon aromatics. Similar flavors hit the tongue on introduction. The wine does evolve as it passes back. Some hints of mineral mid-palate. Good citric acid mid- to back-palate. Controlled use of oakyou can detect the complexity that it adds, but this is no butter-bomb. Read More

  • Waterbrook Rose of Sangiovese 2013

    Snoothrank:

Edgy and rough on the nose with touches of watermelon and a bit of citric acid. Light bodied in the mouth with more melon and citrus, quite round but focussed towards the front of the mouth with less acidity than perhaps would be welcome in this wine. Read More

  • Botter Di Maria Prosecco DOC NV

    Snoothrank:

Light melon and lemon aromas are slightly waxy and have a touch of tropical fruit as well. Tangerine and melon flavors with enough fresh acidity to buoy this, it's a clean light prosecco with toast and yeast notes to finish out. Read More
