Name of varietal: Marzemino
Common synonyms: known throughout Italy by Balsamina Nera, Barzemin, Bassamino, Berzemino Calopico, Bossamino, Magnacan, Marsemina, Marzamino, Marzemin, Marzemino d'Isera, Marzemino gentile, Marzemino Padovano, Merzemina and Uva Tedesco.
Parentage of the grape: native to either northern Italy or Austria
History of the grape: It is thought to have been growing in Trentino as far back as the 15th century, possibly brought there from Austria by Italian soldiers serving the Republic of Venice. There is mention of it in the late 18th century Mozart opera Don Giovani, “Versa il vino! Eccellente Marzemino!” It was once one of the blending grapes in Chianti, but is no longer allowed according to DOC regulations. In Lombardy, it is most commonly found as a blend, while in Trentino, it is often a single varietal wine.
Characteristics of the grape: produces light-bodied red wines with a dark tint, sometimes slightly frizzante. Has a plummy taste with a hint of grassiness. There are sweet “passito” versions, usually produced as a blend.
Regions where the grape is currently important: most of northern Italy, such as Lombardy, Trentino, Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia.
