Parentage of the grape: Unknown

History of the grape: Marsanne is native to the northern Rhone valley in France. There, it was the traditional blending partner of Roussanne, but has slowly been taking over because of its greater reliability. It is becoming the primary variety in appellations such as St-Joseph, St-Peray, and Crozes-Hermitage. The role of Roussanne had been to bring acidity to the blend, since Marsanne can be flabby, but when grown in the right place, picked at the right time, and not overcropped, Marsanne can produce balanced wines. This variety also produces excellent wines in Switzerland and in nearby Savoie, where it is known as Grosse Roussette. Marsanne is used in blends throughout the Languedoc, but is not one of the varieties Read more »

  • Torbreck White Blend Eden Valley Viognier/Marsanne/Roussanne 2008

Some spiciness and herbal qualities with stone fruit that comes out behind it, and very mild acidity. Seems a bit unbalanced and too short, but I am intrigued by the aroma. Read More

  • Preston Vineyards Madame Preston 2007

We had this the other night at a restaurant. Usually it's a struggle to finish a bottle, just the wife and me, in one sitting. Not this time. We had to walk it off before we went home, but it was worth the extra hour of babysitting time. A little floral, a little creamy, a little minerality, a little peach, a little lemon, a little unctuous f... Read More

  • St. Cosme Gigondas Valbelle 2006

...Looking in the glass like it was poured from an inkwell... dark, brooding and daring, this Gigondas matches in the strength of its aromas: waves of violets, herbs, blueberry, and plum followed by a smoky minerality. Then onto the palate with big, contrasting flavors of gamey meats, black pepper, tea and black cherries. All combine to create a... Read More
