Parentage of the grape: Unknown

History of the grape: Marsanne is native to the northern Rhone valley in France. There, it was the traditional blending partner of Roussanne, but has slowly been taking over because of its greater reliability. It is becoming the primary variety in appellations such as St-Joseph, St-Peray, and Crozes-Hermitage. The role of Roussanne had been to bring acidity to the blend, since Marsanne can be flabby, but when grown in the right place, picked at the right time, and not overcropped, Marsanne can produce balanced wines. This variety also produces excellent wines in Switzerland and in nearby Savoie, where it is known as Grosse Roussette. Marsanne is used in blends throughout the Languedoc, but is not one of the varieties Read more »

  • Preston Vineyards Madame Preston 2007

    Snoothrank:

We had this the other night at a restaurant. Usually it's a struggle to finish a bottle, just the wife and me, in one sitting. Not this time. We had to walk it off before we went home, but it was worth the extra hour of babysitting time. A little floral, a little creamy, a little minerality, a little peach, a little lemon, a little unctuous f... Read More

Tahbilk 2004 MARSANNE Opened 29/10/09Hard to knock this wine, I have been drinking this wine since it was $6.99 a bottle now its a little more, but it never fails to please. If you happen to stumble over an older one, buy it and be ready to be impressed: Nose: Honeyed hints of old wood, opening to a clean nose. No sign of spoilage. Colour: Mol... Read More

  • I've found myself recently heading for much more acidic reds -- mainly Italian. ... and southern French wines -- Marsanne/Roussane-based things -- but recently it's been much more Alsace-style (a lot of Pinot Blancs, preferably with a bit of age, and Gewurtzträminers) -- and good white Burgundies (Adelaide Hills chardonnays in a pinch).I'd be i... • Sadie Family Sequillo White 2007

    Snoothrank:

A magical blend of principally Chenin Blanc with Marsanne, Roussanne and a touch of Viognier. Creamy edged, full, textural, weighty reminiscent of a Pinot Gris but with more of a crisp finish. Very food friendly.http://www.spittoon.biz/the_wine_society_-_brief_notes.html Read More

  • Edward Sellers Vineyards and Wines White Rhone Blend Paso Robles Blanc du Rhone 2007

    Snoothrank:

a blend of 3 varietals originating from the Rhone in Southern France - Marsanne, Rousanne, and Viognior. I've never tasted such a blend coming from California and I was very impressed. It was a golden light yellow in color, citrus aromas followed by more complex tastes of the oak, a nuttiness, vanilla, and riper citrus fruits. Fairly full in ... Read More
